Lankan Scientist amongst 2021 OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Award Recipients

Sri Lankan scientist Imalka Munaweera has been recognised as one of the five winners of the 2021 OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awards for Early-Career Women Scientists in the Developing World, for research in chemistry, mathematics and physics.

A senior lecturer at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, her work and research in synthetic chemistry and materials specialising in creating functionalised materials, nanoparticles, nanocomposite for various industrial applications has proved impactful in providing effective solutions to various issues.

She has also conducted research in nanotechnology for drug delivery/pharmaceutical applications, agricultural applications and water purification applications.

The five recipients of the award hail from Ghana, Guatemala, Mongolia, Palestine and Sri Lanka, all of which are developing countries.

The scientists’ commitment to mentoring young scientists and improving the quality of life of those in their communities is also taken into consideration.
