Ah how the world never ceases to surprise us! They say that one day, the English language will no longer be the global lingua franca. aka. the common language. No on has really spoken about Sinhalese maybe working its way up there, but hey! The first step always matters!
And what’s this first step you ask? Well, the Oxford English Dictionary and Oxford Dictionaries have introduced the South Indian and Sinhalese word, “Aiyo”. This oh-so-common and frequently used word has been defined as “expressing distress, regret, or grief; ‘Oh no!’, ‘Oh dear!“.
We can’t wait to hear the rest of the world holler “AIYO”!
