Known to be a South American fast food spot in Sri Lanka, Rusty Rhodes offers a range of burgers, wraps, salads and sandwiches. Located at Crescat food court and available on Uber Eats this eatery is made accessible to the majority of Colombo, although it’s price points may be considered steep for quality. Worthwhile the first try, but is it something we would be returning to? Here’s what we thought.

Steak Guacamole Wrap – LKR 740

Although the initial presentation could’ve been better, we left this aspect aside giving them the benefit of the doubt as it had been delivered. This wrap sounds like quite a healthy yet flavour-packed option, the dish was more Grecian than Mexican and seemed a little confusing from what was advertised. If you’re looking for something quick and easier to eat, perhaps this won’t be your top choice. Wraps may be known to be messy, but getting this one off the plate and away from our clothing was quite the task. More creamy in flavour, overpowering the sweet avocado and a dash of spice, the steak was perhaps overcooked to a chewy consistency. Not the worst, but there’s definitely room for improvement.

Texas Classic Beef BBQ Burger and Regular Fries – LKR 840

BBQ and beef is almost always a crowd-pleaser! With well-done meat patties, this burger got its fair share of mixed reactions. Overlooking the fact that the fries aren’t included in the meal and need to be ordered separately, the price for this solo burger retails at LKR 510 and an extra LKR 330 for regular fries. As an avid beef and BBQ lover, I wasn’t pleased with this burger so I was happy to have tried it once and move on.

Orgasmic Burger (LKR 990) with Spicy Wedges Add-on (LKR 400)

Despite the raunchy name, this burger may have set itself up on a pedestal as its decent portion size and mild flavour allow it to be described as a decent chicken burger at best. With every bite, we eagerly searched for that feeling usually associated with most comfort food, much to our disappointment, it did not satisfy. Burgers and fries usually go hand-in-hand, however we opted for spicy wedges hoping to add the spice but the wedges made no difference to the overall burger experience. Perhaps what may have been letting this burger down was the dry chicken patties and its lack of a balanced flavour character. Retailing at LKR 990 with a further LKR400 for a medium sized portion of spicy wedges.

Wing Box (500g) with Atomic Hot Sauce Add-on – LKR 1250

With a very generous portion size and probably the most justifiable price point to portion size ratio. We expected succulent chicken wings tossed in hot sauce, what we got was fried chicken unevenly topped with a ‘lunumiris’ styled paste. It was hard to notice other flavour notes such as sourness, saltiness or sweetness as it was overpowered with only chilli, even though the spice was a warm welcome it would have benefitted to have the other flavour notes match up to the spice for a balanced flavour experience. The texture, however, was satisfactory and made it through this review effortlessly. Adding on the Atomic hot sauce and selected portion size, this came at LKR 1250.

Overall, the food was fine and tasted quite alright but it definitely didn’t make us want to go back for more. Although our experience was just a tad bit disappointing, here’s to hoping you have a good one!
