If I Was Stranded On a Deserted Island: The Sri Lankan Food Edition

2017 Jul 1

So you know how when you and your buddies are bored to tears and you start playing some random game just to pass the time? You either play ‘Spin the Bottle’ or ‘Truth or Dare’ or if you’re hoping for something a bit more interesting and including alcohol, you play ‘Never Have I Ever’ and spill all your secrets (luckily, there’s a 50/50 chance of you being too drunk to remember anything from the previous night). Well, in addition to all these fun little games, there’s also ‘If You Were Stranded on a Deserted Island’. For example, “If you were stranded on a deserted island, which movies would you take?” or “If you were stranded on a deserted island, which three people would you take?”

So, you get the idea. Here’s my version with a Lankan twist.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what Sri Lankan food would you take?

  1. Isso Wadé

Yes, this is the number one munchie on my list. If I were to be stuck on an isolated island, I would stack up on my isso wadé; especially since I wouldn’t have to share it with anyone.

  1. Rice and Curry

In a utopian world, where food never goes bad, I would take a few parcels of rice and curry; some red rice, fried potato, dhal curry, mango curry, a nice un-bony piece of juicy chicken and papadum. Y-U-M.

  1. Lamprais

I love rice and curry, but I am not a huge fan of having the same thing over and over again (unless it’s Pringles. Pringles is life). This Lankan/ Dutch Burgher specialty is a much loved meal. It is priceless, alongside some pieces of chicken, fried ash plantain curry, seeni sambol and a yummy cutlet.

  1. Hoppers

Another delicious Lankan delicacy is the Hopper. My favorite kind is a plain ‘aappa’, a bit on the sweet side, with a bit of katta sambol on the side.  On that note, I highly commend the makers of this amazing tidbit. I have faced many failed attempts in trying to make aappa, although the experienced cooks in our favorite kadés make the process look absolutely effortless.

  1. Pol Roti

Sweet Mother of Rotis. Pol roti, katta sambol and a dollop of chicken curry is such a delectable combination. It is definitely my go-to Lankan breakfast; that, and Kiribath, of course.

  1. Tipi Tip

You’re probably laughing at me, but Tipi Tip star-shaped chips are the best “Onion Stars” I have ever eaten.  Since these packets are extremely inexpensive to buy, I would probably take a sack full if I were to be stuck on my own on a deserted island. Plus, I would be glad that no one would be able to poke their prying fingers into my packet of chips.

  1. Elephant House Ice Cream

Once again, I am thinking along the unrealistic, utopian lines of life, but hey; Willy Wonka managed to make ice cream that would never melt, so who am I to say that an incredibly innovative Lankan wouldn’t manage to concoct this glorious treat? Anyway, I would take tubs of chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, cookies and cream, and chocolate chocolate-chip ice cream. Yes, I will end up a fat, fat fatty.

(P. S- I wouldn’t mind having a few packets of Sri Lankan “Chinese” food as well)
