Although Sri Lankans do not celebrate Halloween in the traditional way, the number of parties happening all over the city during the Halloween weekend tends to definitely put people in the Halloween spirit! As such, many are passionate about dressing up and put a lot of thought into their costumes. In light of this, we have compiled a list of the most common and popular Halloween costumes you’re likely to come across this year.

As terrifying and nerve-wracking as the U.S. Presidential elections have been this year, Halloween is the time of year where people are definitely going to make the best of it! With a wispy orange-blonde wig, classic suit and striking red tie, the 2016 Republican nominee for presidency is a highly popular and most searched for costume this year.

The Pokémon Go app may have been disabled in Sri Lanka, but that’s not going to stop us Sri Lankans from dressing up as these iconic characters from our childhood! The short stint we had with this new game rekindled our love for Pokémon once again. In very different creative manners, many people will be attempting Pokémon costumes as Pikachu, Charmander or other popular Pokémon. In fact, don’t be quite too surprised if you see someone dressed up as a Pokéball! Apparently, that’s a thing now.

The popular social media app has become increasingly popular and viral over the past year since the launch of Snapchat filters, which playfully alter various aspects of your snap. By converting these filters into reality, a number of costumes have gained popularity, such as the flower crown, dog ears and tongue, rainbow filter and butterfly crown! Being rather simple and fun costumes, you can expect to see quite a few this Halloween.

  1. Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad

The Great Clown Scare of 2016, otherwise known as the Clown-Apocalypse of America and other Western countries will no doubt creep its way into Sri Lanka! Hopefully, none of these costume wearers belong to the original group of Killer Clowns spotted all over the world. Nonetheless, they will definitely make for a bright, colourful, and slightly creepy Halloween of course.

  1. Superheroes

The Pokémon category is quite definitely blowing up this year. Many are opting for costumes in this theme. If not for the Pokémon themselves, their trainers are a popular choice. Either as Ash, Misty, other trainers, or even a costume inspired from the trainer outfit in Pokémon Go, fans of the show seem determined to pay tribute to Pokémon Go in one way or the other.

Keep an eye out for these costumes and you will definitely have to start keeping score! Most importantly, put some thought into your costume, dress up and have a very spooky, frightening Halloween this year.
