Things We Wish Would Happen in 2017

2016 Dec 29

Ah 2016, the year of Dank memes, Harambe and really crappy trends – all ridiculous for their own unique reasons – how we will miss you… not.

Although most of our personal lives may not have been excruciating, 2016 really has me wondering about the sustainability of the human race and how much longer it would take planet earth to spontaneously self-combust.

Luckily enough, we do have a new year coming up in a couple days, which presents us with a chance for redemption. So without much ado, here are the things we really, really, really wish for 2017.

1. Hopefully 2017 will slow down a bit

Is it just me or do we all remember New Year’s Eve of 2016 being just yesterday? This year has whizzed by so fast that my mind can’t begin to fathom where time has disappeared to. Probably didn’t Carpe Diem enough this year either.

2. A Good year for Hollywood

More than 80% of the people reading this article are anticipating a new season or the release of a new movie, come 2017. Be it Game of Thrones, Wonder Woman, or Guardians of the Galaxy we really wish our brain matter would survive the collective mind spasms heading our way.

3. The completion of the Lotus Tower

Honestly, The Tower was a structure promised years ago and progress has been snail-paced. What with the failure of Port City and the disappointment of Mattala Airport, we, as a country, could really use a boost in the faith of our infrastructure.

4. More Cosplaying and Geek embracing

If anything, 2016 has been a wholesome year for the Geeks of Sri Lanka. With Geek-meets and plenty of opportunities to Cosplay, the streets of Colombo are seeing more and more comic-book characters coming to life. We sincerely wish 2017 brings us more Geek-centered activities and events.

5. Less Icons dying

Prince, Alan Rickman, Harper Lee; heaven truly is a wonderland post-2016 and it has. to. stop. It’s like George R. R. Martin wrote 2016 just to mess with us, and it’s so not cool.

I suggest a witness protection program for the likes of Stan Lee, Betty White and J.K. Rowling so the Grim Reaper will have a hard time finding and taking away everyone we love.

6. Saying goodbye to ‘Social Experiments’ & Challenges

Apart from the Mannequin challenge, 2016 was a year full of the stupidest challenges the human race could come up with. If you haven’t seen the backpack challenge, the condom challenge or the thigh-gap challenge, consider yourself one of the lucky ones. Unless this is how the Millennials want to be remembered it’s time we put a stop to these bizarre trends, come 2017.

7. Increased salaries

Don’t deny it; all of you would love a hike in your salaries so you can spend and do more of what you love. Traveling would become so much easier and you wouldn’t have to be confined to just your home country.

8. Lower prices and free shipping

Many of us resort to online shopping now  because it’s honestly so much easier and involves less of a hassle. Sure, it isn’t like the real deal, but you still get what you want at the end of the day, right? But dammit those shipping costs are a real……. You know… So hopefully 2017, may be kinder to us and make our lives easier by introducing more online stores with free shipping to Sri Lanka!

9. That it won’t be another 2016

In all honesty, 2016 was a year filled with many absurd and bizarre moments. Trump became President of the US, countless number of people and children have fallen victim to war, several terrorist attacks have occurred and the so many beloved celebrities have passed away; Carrie Fisher yesterday, Debbie Reynolds today. 2016 needs to chill out now!

On a more serious note though, all we really wish for is a reduction in pollution, capitalism and violence. For the world to be a happier place, for goodness to prevail and for all of us to be kinder people. And how do we do that? Listen to the Queen herself:

JK. (Rowling – hahahaha). Let’s all make a conscious effort to be nicer people and to contribute towards the betterment of our own kind. 2017 is greatness waiting to happen so let’s do this, Sri Lanka.

Here’s hoping it really is a Happy New Year!
