Ever since the early 18oos, the ways of Old Ceylon have been set in stone –we were always a primarily tea drinking nation, whose people will refuse to function without their morning and evening tea rituals. But fast forward a couple centuries to 2018 and you will find that Sri Lanka and its beverage consuming habits have vastly evolved. Of course, we still love and need our tea, but there is now a coffee shop or café on every corner in Colombo and the consumption of coffee by the new generation quite surpasses that of tradition. You see more and more Colombars opting for cappuccinos, frappuccinos and other social fads that have definitely taken our sunny little island by storm, proving that Colombo’s Coffee Culture is ever-growing.
Whilst the older generation will prefer to sit on their veranda, sipping their tea, “Let’s go for coffee” is a frequently used phrase amongst the youth of Colombo. Coffee is consumed on dates, over business deals and in board rooms, but Colombo doesn’t stop there. We now have a plethora of different ways in which we can consume coffee including:
• Coffee cakes
• Mocha brownies
• Coffee cocktails
• and the go-to coffee biscuits
With the crazy hectic schedules that we all maintain, as new-age Sri Lankan coffee drinkers, our youth has minimal time on their hands to actually brew and savorcoffee. In between running to meetings, scheduling gym session and maintaining a social life, they can turn to other alternatives that can be consumed on-the-go, quick and easy.
