Bustling capital city of Colombo has most of the convenient outlets and malls and other major cities also have a number of convenient stores to satisfy a shopper’s impulses.
But hey, if you are looking to strategically divide your shopping time, here are a few key fundamentals to remember that will pack some punch into your shopping experience.
Too hot for fashion
Wherever you shop, comfort comes first! Not to state the obvious, but shopping in a tropical country like Sri Lanka has its highs and lows. For a shopper, the constant sunny heat can sure turn a shopping experience into a nightmare if you don’t dress up comfortably and accessorize right. We get it, you want to look great for those #sundayshopping Instagram pictures. In this hot weather, accessorizing matters as much as the outfit that you are going to be in. Opt for sundresses and loose big bags! A straw bag is an adorably-quaint accessory if you are sun dressing up to shop for the weekend. If you decide to wear stilettos to go on a shopping spree you might have to rethink this. Your best pick would be loafers!
Less mooting, more choosing!
If you know where you want to shop, it’s much easier to deviate between what’s necessary and not. Shops aren’t exactly located near each other in Colombo so you’ll be driving around in circles from shop to shop if you have no idea where to go. Unlike a few years ago, Sri Lanka now has frequent sales everywhere all year long, with a selective number of pieces that are worthwhile purchasing. So if you want to get your hand on something novel at a good bargain you may have to lookout for sale promotions popping up on your newsfeed!
Stay away the from the common
It’s far too common in Sri Lanka to show up at a party and find someone else wearing exactly the same thing you are! With new and bold designer wear flourishing here in Sri Lanka, why jump into purchases that may be too common or last year? Find your own style. Do research before shopping. Remember, there are number of stores that offer designer labeled clothing and other items with affordable price tags and more importantly eccentric stylish designs that will embrace and signify for who you are. All you have to do is spend some time browsing your Instagram and you’ll stumble across every page!
Don’t stick with high end only!
Although Sri Lanka has a growing number of upscale stores from which to buy great clothes, don’t just stick to these! Smaller stores have cropped up all over the country, and these places tend to have a good selection of things for much cheaper prices. Venture out on to the streets of Maharagama, Pettah, Dehiwela, Battaramulla, and other areas too for a surprising shopping experience.
Don’t go looking for your specific size.
So, you’re a size 8 and looking for clothes exclusively in your size? Good luck with that! Sri Lankan sizes are different in every store you come across, so you pretty much won’t know what size you are in each store until you try the item on. Keep an open mind and remember, in Sri Lanka anything goes!
