Although their origins are not from Sri Lanka, these little shops scattered all throughout the country have entwined with our culture and are part of our identity. Saiwar kade which literally means ‘vegetarian shop’ in Tamil is an eatery that specialize in South-Indian cuisine. Whether you are a vegetarian or just want to give the meats a break, check out these restaurants and you will not regret it.

 

1. Saraswathie Lodge

The Saraswathie Lodge has been in Bambalapitiya for decades and is The most popular Saiwar Kade in Sri Lanka. Their food is amazing and cheap so it’s a win for all. However, like most, ambiance is not their strong point so takeout or ordering in will be the best thing to do.

2. Sri Vihar

Located right in the middle of Thummulla, Sri Vihar is the perfect vegetarian restaurant to grab a quick bite. The food is quite good and has an extensive menu, the ambience is not too shabby and the value is up there.

3. Amrithaa Vegetarian Restaurant

Another typical Saiwar Kade, Amrithaa offers good food and even better prices and is perfect for a quick snack or a huge meal. This busy little shop cooks up a storm and although it’s packed most of the time, the service is fast.

4. Dwaraka Indian Vegetarian Restaurant

If you still want some good South Indian vegetarian food but with a better dining experience, Dwaraka is the place to visit. This quaint little shop down marine drive has a good view, good food and you will most certainly have a good time there.

5. Shanmugas Vegetarian Restaurant

Shanmugas has been around for a long time and is one of the most popular Saiwar Kades in Colombo. Their food is amazing and their ambiance is among the best in the city. A personal favorite of mine and although the food is a tad bit more expensive it’s worth the money.

6. Navayuga

A gorgeous house turned Indian restaurant, Navayuga will most certainly deliver on both food and overall dining experience. With amazing food and service this is more on the higher end of the spectrum and you will surely enjoy your time here.

7. Chutneys (Cinnamon Grand)

This is definitely not a Saiwar Kade but if you’re looking for South Indian vegetarian food and want to be a bit fancy at the same time, this is the place for you. It’s everything we expect from a five-star hotel with the added benefit of being totally vegetarian.

8. Indo Ceylon Cafe

Another Colombo favorite this little restaurant is small and not that impressive to look at but their food is AMAZING! Being situated in Kollupitiya also makes it a convenient option to all those vegetarians (and non-vegetarians) in the area.

9. Thalis Restaurant Indian Vegetarian Cusine

Their extensive menu and welcoming space makes Thalis a favourite among many and having both North and Sound Indian food makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

10. Sri Vani Vilas

Although not at the heart of Colombo Sri Vani Vilas comes highly recommended and their  food is worth the hype.  Their menu is massive and the restaurant itself is better than most in its caliber so if you’re in the area you have to drop by some time.

12. Thiru Murugan’s Food Wave

Another more fancy vegetarian shop in terms of how it looks and the food follows through just the same. Whether you are looking to have a sit down meal or take some food home you will not be disappointed.

12. Anandha Bhavan

Located in Thimbirigasyaya, this is another old and typical Saiwar Kade with all the staples we expect from the food to the ambiance. Its location makes it a convenient option for many and the food itself is quite good.
