Events In Colombo That Are Rescheduled Due To COVID-19 Outbreak

The COVID-19 outbreak in Sri Lanka is cause for concern as more affected patients are being identified across the country. Government officials have requested for any public events that are happening during this time to be postponed, keeping everyone’s best interest in mind. Listed below is a round-up of major events that were scheduled to take place within the few weeks, but are now postponed or cancelled, due to the current situation in the country.

 

1. Colombo Fashion Week

Colombo Fashion Week, one of the most anticipated events in Colombo, that aims to uplift the fashion industry in the country, with hopes of taking it to a global level. The event was set to take place from 18th of March 2020 until the 21st of March 2020, but now is postponed until further notice. 2. England Tour of Sri Lanka

Coming as a disappointment to all the Lankan Cricket fans, the England Tour of Sri Lanka Test tour will be rescheduled to a later date, at the request of the England and Wales Cricket Board. The event was supposed to be held on the 19th of March 2020 and the new dates are yet to be announced.

 

3. 45th Royal Thomian Mustangs Trophy One Day Encounter

4. 46th Annual One Day Encounter Between Ananda College and Nalanda College

Another heated event that most Lankans look forward for, between two of the most popular schools in Colombo. The event was supposed to be held on the 15th of March 2020, at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground, however, is postponed until further notice.

 

5. 14th One-day Encounter Between D.S.Senanayake College and Mahanama College

The Battle of the Golds one day encounter that was scheduled to be held on the 4th of April 2020, is reported to be postponed until further notice.

 

6. 35th One Day Encounter Between Prince of Wales College and St. Sebastian’s College

The one day encounter between Prince of Wales College and St. Sebastian’s College, set to happen on the 15th of March 2020 at the De Zoysa Stadium in Moratuwa, is rescheduled until further notice.

 

7. 13th Annual T20 Encounter Between Isipathana College and Thurstan College

The friendly rivalry during the Big Match season, between Thurstan College and Isipathana College is almost sacred. However, the 13th T20 match for the Priya Paranavithana Challenge Trophy, set to happen on the 15th of March 2020 at the Thurstan College grounds is rescheduled until further notice.

 

8. School Rugby League

Sports events that are happening across the nation have been affected because of the Coronavirus outbreak. The Schools Rugby League kicked off on the 4th of March, but had to pause halfway, after the Vidyartha College vs St. Peter’s College match. All rugby matches from the 15th of March 2020 to 5th of April 2020 have been postponed and the new dates have not been announced as of yet.

 

9. Run For Their Lives 2020

Run For Their Lives is one of the most popular charity events around town. It is a 5 km charity run, organised by the Rotaract Club of Colombo Uptown, that donates the proceedings from the event to the Apeksha Cancer Hospital in Maharagama. The event was set to be held on the 28th of March 2020, but is now postponed. They hope to announce an update by the 28th of April 2020 on the rescheduled dates. 10. Google I/O Extended 2020

Google I/O Extended 2020, the most anticipated tech event in the country and the largest I/O Extended in South East Asia, is aimed at educating tech enthusiasts with the latest of Sri Lankan built technologies and giving them the invaluable opportunity to network within the community. The event scheduled to happen in May alongside the physical Google I/O conference at Mountain View, California, was cancelled due to the prevailing Coronavirus outbreak.

 

11. Raffles Saviskara 2020

Raffles Saviskara, the Graduation Ceremony, Interior Design and Graphic Design Exhibition and Fashion show of the Raffles University, Colombo, is set to be rescheduled. The event was supposed to be held on the 24th of March 2020 at Taj Samudra, but now is postponed until further notice. The new dates will be announced on their Facebook Events page

12. Cinnamon Jazz and Jam by the Lake

An evening filled with Jazz music and good vibes, the March 29th edition of Jazz and Jam at Cinnamon Lakeside Colombo was cancelled. However, two more editions of the event is set to take place on the 26th of April 2020 and the 31st of May 2020. 13. Colombo Wind Orchestra Concert

The 8th Annual Concert organised by the Colombo Wind Orchestra is a concert that showcases an exciting line up of all-time favorite pieces. The event was set to be held on the 21st of March but is now postponed until further notice. 14. ‘Saade’ Live In Concert

The ‘Saade’ Live In Concert, organised by the Rotaract Club of Panadura, is a fun-filled event with musical performances by Dushyanth Weeraman, Bathiya and Santhush and Sunil Perera. The event was organised with hopes of raising funds for charitable causes and was set to be held on the 28th of March 2020 at the Youth Center in Maharagama. 15. Medivision 2020

The Medivision 2020 Medical Exhibition is the brain child of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, with hopes of inspiring the next generation on becoming medical and associated professionals and to create interest among school children on relevant topics pertaining to the health of our nation. The event was set to be held on the 30th of March 2020 but is now postponed due to the uncertainty of the current situation. 16. Wine and Dine with BNS

The Wine and Dine is a unique concept created by The Barnhouse, that encompasses an up-close, personal and intimate experience with renowned artists in Sri Lanka. From soulful music, to good food and beverages, this event aims to give the performers as well as the guests an exquisite experience. The event was set to take place at The Barnhouse, on the 22nd of March 2020, but now has to be postponed until further notice. 18. Psycho Parade 2020

19. Blood Drive 2020

Donating blood for people in need is always a good cause. Unfortunately, Blood Drive 2020, hosted by Continental Insurance Lanka Limited, that was supposed to be held on the 20th of March 2020, is now postponed. 20. Fashion With A Focus feat. Uniq Vocal

A charity event where the designer brand AMY G showcases its latest collection on the runway and auctions off specific pieces, in order to donate the proceeds to the Karapitiya Cancer Hospital. It is in collaboration with Uniq Vocal, which is a singing contest for up and coming talents to grab the opportunity to sing with one of the Sri Lankan musical prodigies. 21. Dusk To Dawn with Ferreck Dawn

The event was set to be held at Sugar Beach on the 28th of March 2020. However, due to the current concerns, the event will be on hold until further notice.

 

22. Dare To Be Equal : A Panel Discussion By Amanté

The Dare To Be Equal panel discussion that features a panel of empowered women speaking on what equality really means in present times, among other topics such as Collective Individualism and Gender Equality. The event was set to take place at Colombo Cooperative, on the 19th of March 2020. However, the event has now been cancelled, keeping everyone’s safety in mind.

 

23. WNPS Monthly Lecture

The WNPS Monthly Lecture hosted by the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society in Sri Lanka, is an event that gives insight into the elusive Indian Pangolin, with the expertise of Dr. Priyan Perera. This event discusses the current knowledge on Indian pangolin with special reference to Sri Lanka, and identifies key research priorities for better conservation planning of the species. The event was set to be held on the 19th of March 2020, but unfortunately, is now cancelled.

 

24. Alyssa by Stigmata

Alyssa, an album by Stigmata, one of the most popular metal bands in Sri Lanka, that aims to create an anthem on behalf of all the pets that our Sri Lankans have lost. They produced a new music video for ‘Alyssa’ and encouraged the public to send them pictures or videos with names of all the pets that people would like to pay tribute to and was geared up for the premiere of the ‘Alyssa’ single and music video. The premiere was supposed to held on the 25th of March 2020, but is now postponed until further notice.

25. Costa Marley Lankawe Kollek Live

A Live in concert that celebrates the Sri Lankan rap culture in music. With young musical talents and performances by many artists including Randhir Witana, the event was supposed to be held on the 20th of March 2020 at the Viharamaha Devi Open Air Theatre. The event is now postponed until further notice. 
26. Hanthanata Payana Sanda Live In Concert
A musical night that highlights the work of the musical prodigy Amarasiri Peiris, was supposed to be held on the 22nd of March 2020, at the Musaeus College Auditorium. However, the event is now cancelled. 
27. Marians Symphonica
A brand new concert series by the musical group, Marians, that features a great line up of music with the accompaniment of an orchestral string quartet. The event was supposed to be held on the 28th of March 2020, at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre. The event is now postponed, until further notice.
28. CodeSprint 5.0
CodeSprint is the premier Inter-University Hackathon of Sri Lanka organized by the IEEE Student Branch of Informatics Institute of Technology. This event is all about sparking innovation among the younger generation, encouraging them to come up with innovative solutions for issues prevalent both locally and globally. Registrations for the event is open until the 18th of March, however, the event itself is postponed until further notice.
