Tattoos are beautiful pieces of art that people get to keep a certain memory or thought inked to last a lifetime. For most, it’s something they hold very special and dear to who they are and a tattoo is usually a something that reminds you of where and what you’ve been through. For some, it’s a form of inspiration, others, a reminder.
As magical as it seems, how many of us Sri Lankans will actually take the risk of getting one done on ourselves? Yes, we’re great at giving advice about how people should chase their dreams, experiment with life and not let anything hold them back. But really, are we bold enough to practice what we preach?
Tattoos are such a strong taboo in the country that getting a tattoo puts you at the risk of your mom kicking you out of home! Literally, as scary as it sounds, there’s a higher possibility of them eating you alive than telling you your tattoo looks good, no matter how beautifully drawn it is.
This is why we’ve got you a solution. You dont need to train yourself like Hercules to be courageous enough to get a tattoo. We’ve got a list of the places in your body where you can get a tattoo and keep it hidden at the same time. Okay, don’t ask me what’s the point of getting one if nobody is going to see it, look it this way, isn’t this better than not getting one at all?
- In between your fingers
This is by far one of the best places to get a tattoo. A great place to tuck in a tattoo that’s so subtly, but strategically placed at the same time. If you want to get away with having one, this may not be the best option yet, because our moms are able to spot a grey hair strand from about a mile away, LOL. But this is the best place to get a tattoo if you want to make its appearance subtle.
They are super fun and a great form of self-expression, but if you dig into your research, you’ll find that finger tattoos can fade and they hurt quite terribly because your finger are full of nerves. Also, in between your fingers is not the best place to try out an intricate tattoo, this is because of the tricky nature of the skin in that area.
- At the back of your neck
This is also such a great place to hide away a minimalistic tattoo. The plus side here is that if you want your tattoo to be hidden, you can always let your hair down, but if you want it out there, then a hair up-do will do you good. The versatility of this tattoo makes it one of the most common out of the options available.
Neck tats are one of the most pinned on Pinterest. Tattoos that are usually small and minimalistic are so in style right now.
There is a word of caution though, tattoos on the neck, if they are visible, might limit employability options. I know what you’re thinking, in Sri Lanka, a visible tattoo anywhere will limit every option possible, from marriage to employment! But I’m talking about companies that have strict policies against facial piercings or tattoos. Make sure it’s hidden away during work so your boss doesn’t see it.
Fun Fact: Did you know that Ariana Grande’s half-up, half-down hair dos hides her tattoo. It’s right under her hairline on the back of her neck. This is ideal for the long haired girls!
- Just behind your ear
I’ve heard that this is a little more painful area to get a tattoo (comment below and let us know if you’ve got one behind your ear). But a tattoo just behind your ear for some reason looks and feels graceful. Tucked away with your hair strands, it’s more likely that people miss out on it. It’s like a little secret tucked away in a little corner.
Even though my research tells me that getting a tattoo behind the ear hurts the most out of the lot, you gotta remember, the pain is temporary but the tattoo is forever. While getting the tattoo, clench your fist tight and keeping repeating to yourself that ‘pain is beauty and beauty is pain’.
- On the side of your foot
This is also another great place to get a tattoo. It’s not really as hidden as one behind your ear or under your neck, but it has this element to it that makes it stand out from the rest of the places described on this list.
What I’ve heard about tattoos on your foot is the fact that it hurts quite bad. When it comes to feet, you gotta decide if you want other people to understand or for you to understand it visually. Okay, so by this I mean, if you have the tattoo facing down, then it’s more likely that it’s for display for others as well. But I’ve seen a couple of tattoos faced up, so it’s the person wearing it who can really see what it is without having to strain a neck. I find tattoos facing up really cool because I think the ambiguity it adds to your tattoo makes it all the more interesting.
- On the side of your ribs
Tattoos on the side of your ribs are usually quotes. You can go for something super small and make it your dirty little secret, but Pinterest tells me that most tattoos on the side rib are usually quotes.
Fun Fact: Niki Reed has a beautiful side tattoo just under her armpits and on the side of her ribs that’s hidden most of the time unless she opts for a strapless ensemble. With a tattoo on the side of your body, you can choose when to show it off and when not to.
