2016 Sep 1
Your timeline and newsfeed are probably overwhelmed with posts and videos of the 2016 VMA’s. There’s a few artists breaking the internet right now, Kim Kardashian and her “wet” look, Drake and RiRi’s rom-com, and a whole bunch of other things.
There’s one too many articles giving you the ‘highlights’ or the ‘best’ or ‘worst’ moments at this year’s VMA’s. Here’s the only list you need to read if you want to be a 100% up to date.
Disclaimer: This is an article written with an open mind and a very critical thought pattern. If I have offended an artist you like or respect, I apologise in advance. In case I do, skip that number and move into the next.
- Kanye’s apparently very famous

he didn’t crash Taylor’s acceptance speech this year (on a side note, she skipped the VMA’s for jury duty). Anyway, Kanye made sure he made Taylor and even Ray J pretty prominent in his 4 speech before he debuted his video for the song Fade. I must say, his ego seem to grow very progressively with every passing second.
“I am Kanye West, and that feels especially great to say this year. I came here to present my new video, but before I do that, I’mma talk. Now, later tonight, ‘Famous’ might lose to Beyoncé, but I can’t be mad. I’m always wishing for Beyoncé to win, so.
But for people to understand just how blessed we are… It was an expression of our now, our fame right now, us on the inside of the TV. You know, just to put… the audacity to put Anna Wintour right next to Donald Trump. I mean, like, I put Ray J in it, bro. This is fame, bro! Like, I see you Amber. My wife is a G. Not a lot of peoples’ wives would let them say that right there. We came over in the same boat. Now we all in the same bed. Well, maybe different boats, but uh.
But if you think about last week, there were 22 people murdered in Chicago. You know, like, people come up to me like, ‘Yeah, that’s right! Take Taylor!’ But bro, like, I love all y’all. That’s why I called her.
So I was speaking at the Art Institute last year, and a kid came up to me and said ‘Three of my friends died, and I don’t know if I’m gonna be the next.’ And it has to, you know you have to think, like, when you’re a senior and it’s the last month and you just don’t feel like doing any more work. If you feel like you seeing people dying right next to you, you might feel like, what’s the point? You know like life could be like, starting to feel worthless in a way. I know times for me, I sit down and talk to older, like, like, rich people. You know, a.k.a. white, you know. And they tell me, ‘Don’t compare yourself to Steve Jobs. Don’t compare yourself to Walt Disney,’ and my friend Zekiah told me… they tell me, ‘Don’t compare yourself to these people, right.’ My friend Zekiah told me there’s three keys to keeping people impoverished: that’s taking away their esteem, taking away their resources, and taking away their role models. My role models are artists, merchants. There’s less than ten that I can name in history. Truman. Ford. Hughes. Disney. Jobs. West.
Bro. Bro! Tonight, we here to have fun. I’m standing in front of my idol, Puff Daddy. I’m standing in front of my wife, Kim Kardashian West. I’m standing in front of the future: Chance the Rapper, 2 Chainz, Jaden Smith. Bro, we are undeniably the influence, the thought leaders. I’m gonna play y’all a piece of my art, and I just hope y’all have a good time. Play that.”
He did make sense to me here and there, especially where he spoke about keeping one impoverished and what great influence and power fame brings to a person. But the rest of it, I felt like was a waste of time. Sounded much like some of our politicians on the podium.
- Britney’s got it hot

It was her first time on the VMA stage since her disastrous walk through since the public breakdown in 2007. Ms Spears succeeded in her comeback and is now ready to re-enter and re-live pop superstardom.
In her itty bitty yellow number, much to the surprise of My3 and the Electric eels, she really was able to deliver a pretty great performance and comeback, 9 years later.
- RiRi’s called Drake on his cellphone

Not last night, but surely at least a few weeks ago. So cute you guys. If you haven’t seen it yet, watch their little rom-com moment on stage here. So Drake couldn’t accept his own award during the first hour of the show, cause he got stuck in traffic (and we thought Sri Lankan traffic was bad) but he managed to pull himself together to present Rihanna with the Video Vanguard award, or the VMA version of a lifetime achievement award.
But it was all pretty tame in the end. Drake gave Rihanna the award, they had an endearing, if awkward, half-kiss moment, and she gave a heartfelt speech about how much the Vanguard award means to her as an evolving artist.
- Michael Phelps loves his phone

Since he’s done swimming for the Olymipcs, maybe this can be his past-time instead eh? Currently, he’s breaking the internet by and I quote “losing his mind” or “whipping his phone out” when Jimmy Fallon impersonated Ryan Lochte. I mean, Jimmy Fallon did nail the impersonation with the white hair and all, but Phelps seems to have stolen the show.
Also, in case you haven’t kept up, former swimmer is currently held guilty for falsely claiming that he and 3 other American swimmers were pulled over and robbed by armed robbers with police badges while in Rio for this year’s Olympics. He later stated that he was drunk when he made the claim and might have “over-exaggerated the story”.
- Kim somehow stole the show in her beach overalls

Why does Kim manage to steal the show no matter what she turns up in? So this year, Kim left her usually extravagant and elaborate gowns in her closet and opted for a sheer black number that almost looks like a beach overall. The girl paired this up with 2 gold chains and her heeled sandals and her wet makeup and hair effect that she went for.
Personally, I expected something a little more oomph from her and her shoes looked so 90’s. But I think the reason she went for the dress was to show her beautifully toned figure post giving birth to her new baby.
Its Kim, if she turned up in a rice sack she’d still steal the show.
- Alicia Keys didn’t put her face on

I was utterly confused the minute I saw Alicia Keys on the red carpet interviews all fresh and make-up free. The internet though, didn’t take this very lightly. Twitter blew up with critics blasting the poor woman for wearing no makeup.
I think we need to learn from her despite most of them that think that her reasoning was ‘imaginary’ and a publicity stunt. How many of us would have the guts to walk out of our houses without landing a ton of makeup on our faces? I mean look at our Sri Lankan stars, they might be beautiful inside out, but it’s usually so difficult to notice with all that makeup on their faces. They do the 100 layer challenge almost every single day,
Let’s learn from Alicia Keys girls, you don’t need makeup to look or feel beautiful.
