Valentine’s day is basically the most commercialized and exploited holiday (not even a holiday bro, it’s a Tuesday this year and we all have responsibilities) and takes advantage of the most vulnerable parts of all of us, the soft beating muscle in our chests. We’ve tried resisting, from not celebrating at all to throwing anti-valentine’s day parties but come one you guys, a million and one places are giving us the opportunity to pamper our loved ones this Tuesday so I say let’s grab the opportunity. Do it for the vine, the lols, the Instagram picture, and whatever you choose to do, do it for the love.
If you pretty much suck at the planning game, like I do, we have a few suggestions that could help you out this year. We can begin the day with getting our S/Os their favorite kind of coffee. Minimal effort that goes a long long way! And whilst the two of your slave through your days and make it through the grind, you can schedule lunch together at any one of these locations that are ideal for a
Mid-day lunch break:
Sugar Bistro

My go-to option for birthday lunches, family dinners or catching up with friends. The prices are a bit on the higher end of the spectrum for college students such as ourselves, but the food and service falls nothing short of excellent each time. You could spend about Rs. 5,000 for a meal for two and choose from either their Crescat location or the Odel Promenade location, the latter being a more relaxed experience. Cricket Club Café
Completely affordable and super chilled out, Cricket Club Café brings to us a hearty food adventure with a more-than-satisfying dining experience for two people for under Rs. 3,000. It’s also an escape from the busy roads of Colombo and offers a homely, relaxed atmosphere. Check out our review here for more: http://www.pulse.lk/2017/01/10/the-cricket-club-cafe-reviewed/
Picnic in the park
If, like me, you prefer a more customized dining experience, I’m pretty sure your S/O would love a picnic in the park. I know it sounds a little tacky, but this way you can show them you really do care. The little grass patch behind Independence Square or Viharamahadevi park is ideal for a shady, late afternoon picnic. Pick up some of their favorites like Bubble Tea, some Sweet Potato Fries from Isso or some Japanese take-out from Katei Ryori, more variety and more cost effective. Combine it with some flowers or chocolates and they’ll fall more in love with you before you can say ‘awesome’.
Galle Face Green
No, I’m not talking under-umbrella snogging. Galle Face is actually one of the most fun-to-do things one can think of this Valentine ’s Day. Get there around 4.30 to avoid the sun and get a couple kites. Have a competition to see who the better flyer is, loser buys isso wade and achcharu! Be sure to bring some bubbles too, the breeze will make it fun and worth your while. Conclude with some chilled out sunset gazing and appreciate how low maintenance your relationship is.
Dinner:
Galle Face Hotel

GFH is celebrating this valentines day with much fanfare and elegance. We have multiple options you could choose from, including:
The Verandah will host a delicious dinner buffet, surrounded by the romantic ambience of the striking open-air gallery. Priced at Rs. 7,300 per couple.
Sea Spray restaurant and bar is the ideal venue for those who desire to dine under the stars. The alfresco dining offers a special five-course set menu prepared by Executive Chef Adam Gaunt-Evans, and is priced at Rs. 12,500 per couple.
The 1864 Restaurant and Wine Cellar will offer an especially curated five-course menu created by Executive Chef Adam Gaunt-Evans and Chef de Cuisine Anuradha Weerasinghe. Priced at Rs. 15,000 per couple, the dinner features duck confit and wellington of Lamb to tantalize your taste buds.
All three restaurants offer a complimentary glass of rosé sparkling wine as they indulge this Valentine’s Day. So do give them a ring and make reservations soon.
Echo
Sleek and sexy Italian dining at one of Colombo’s oldest establishments, one can be sure to enjoy a very classy Valentine’s dinner here. Check out our review for more: http://www.pulse.lk/2016/11/16/echo-reviewed/
Agra
Dim lighting, soothing music and an extremely romantic atmosphere, Agra is Colombo’s best date spot for some delicious Indian fare. Make reservations ‘cause they’re sure to be in high demand and enjoy a night you won’t forget anytime soon. For more, see here: http://www.pulse.lk/2016/12/07/agra-reviewed/
Havelock Place Bungalow
If you’re looking for some private alfresco dining, the very cozy HPB is the place for you. Frequented only by their loyal boutique hotel guests, Havelock Place Bungalow is a hidden gem with delicious food and an exquisite ambience. You could spend about Rs. 7,000 for two, but it’s absolutely worth it.
Some after dinner coffee or drinks:
All of these places serve food as well, but I love going here for a quick nightcap just because the view is amazing and it’s the perfect way to end the night.
Shamrock
Perfect for some cuddling on their couches and some booze to end off the night, Shamrock brings to us a lounge and club that is everything Irish. More here: http://www.pulse.lk/2016/01/12/shamrock-reviewed/
Berlin Sky Lounge

Overlooking Gangaramaya and most of Colombo, Berlin Sky Lounge is the perfect for a date. Grab a couple beers or some coffee and enjoy the city lights of a Colombo night. More here: http://www.pulse.lk/2016/10/04/the-berlin-sky-lounge-reviewed/
Cloud Red
Another gem with a breathtaking view, Cloud Red at Cinnamon Red serves delicious coffee at their bar and has some very friendly service. City lights and a light breeze is all you could need to end the day on a romantic note.
If you’re in a long distance relationship like most of us these days, think of staying at home, ordering the same pizza, lighting a candle and watching the same movie, making it an online date. I know it’s not the real deal but it’s as close to home as we can get.
So regardless of what you do, just remember to put some thought into it. It wouldn’t hurt to display some extra love on the 14th. Happy dating, ya love birds!
