National Youth Model United Nations 2018 – It’s back!

2018 Aug 31

National Youth Model United Nations (NYMUN) is here yet again, for another round, to engage and aspire the Sri Lankan youth. NYMUN is a two day conference that functions as a national simulation of the United Nations and its affiliated organizations, for youth aged 14-30 in Sri Lanka. From 250 young individuals in the year of 2016 and 350 delegates in 2017, NYMUN is launching this session with the hopes of setting the target at an ambitious 1500 individuals from various parts of the island. NYMUN 2018 conference will be held on the 29th and 30th September 2018 in Colombo and aims to work towards creating the space for youth to learn, understand and analyze the pressing international development challenges and enhance their ability to develop target-oriented solutions. In the process of developing policies and mechanism to address International and National challenges, young people will learn to negotiate, compromise, and adopt an open-minded approach to the discourse that is taking place.

NYMUN is the largest youth MUN platform in Sri Lanka, as youth pursuing all kinds of education and those engaging in professional careers participate one a single platform. This has opened opportunities to the youth to join MUN and renew their passion on international relations, policy-planning and forming, discussion of local and global issues. While its conferences in 2016 and 2017 have been highly successful in developing the understanding of foreign affairs and inculcating diplomacy skills amongst its participating delegates, the conference in 2018 is hoping to instil a much wider scope of skillsets for the optimal benefit of its delegates.

Given the overall vision, the conference is based around the thematic area of youth, peace, and security with special emphasis on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250. Since our inception in 2016 NYMUN continues to encourage delegates to channel their discussions through Sustainable development Goals, to be in line with the global development agenda, believing that the youth play a pivotal role in the journey of achieving a peaceful, just and inclusive society. Therefore, they hope to expand the conference with trilinguality in order to eliminate the barrier of language, through working towards the ‘Vision 2020’. This entails a three phased program to reach out and engage the youth of the entire nation onto a single and unified platform, to voice out their opinions about issues that will shape the future of our nation.
Therefore this year, in addition to the main conference to be held in Colombo, the NYMUN secretariat seeks to organize 8 provincial workshops to spread the concept of MUN across the nation. The workshops will be focused on creating awareness about the work undertaken by the UN, its various bodies and many other informative sessions, while providing a platform for space for youth to develop their public speaking and conflict resolution abilities.

We believe that a peaceful and inclusive society is the pre-condition for national integration and reconciliation. The youth play a pivotal role in the journey of achieving it. By engaging 1500 youth across Sri Lanka, NYMUN looks to promote increased participation of our participants in terms of local discourse. Thereby enabling the youth of this nation to recognize their potential and lead the country towards, sustainable peace and development. To quote Shakespeare, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them”.

This year’s NYMUN 2018 committee extends a warm welcome to the youth of Sri Lanka to join a conference that offers a dynamic experience, beyond just an award or a certificate.
