Dress for the Monsoon

2015 Dec 1

It’s raining cats and dogs. All the time. This time of the year is perfect to give children a grammar lesson and teach them the uses of the phrase ‘24/7’. Ex: It’s raining cats and dogs 24/7 during the months of October to December.

We wake up in the morning, the sun is out and its rays shine on you right through your window, you think to yourself, it’s a beautiful, sunny, warm Monday morning, I’m going to wear my blue sleeveless peplum dress to work. You shave your legs, have a warm bath and get ready to go to work. Its 2:00 p.m. now, you can see the dark clouds rolling in through your office glass, and you can hear the sky rumble and the first few drops of water start to fall. You’re inside the office, your a/c is on, and suddenly, it feels like the Antarctic inside your office and you blame yourself for even buying the peplum in the first place!

Ever gone through the pain of having to try and pull down a skirt which was initially 5 inches above your knee because your legs feel like frostbite?

Well, you’re not the only one! We all go through this cycle day in and day out. How do we decide what to wear to work/school/uni to balance the mix of sunshine and rain we experience? Do we just blame the weather god or the lady who read out the weather report on your late night news network last night? Or, do we style ourselves to fit the monsoon?

Let’s go with the latter, keep reading to find out how!

  1. Always keep a cardigan with you

Whether its wool or cotton, a cardigan always comes in handy. Have one in a neutral colour like black/grey or peach/nude in your handbag so that you can easily take it out and put it on when you’re feeling cold.

  1. Add some colour with a scarf!

We don’t see a lot women in our roads wear scarfs, but scarfs are both chic and elegant. Maybe a bright red/yellow will add some colour to both your outfit and your day. Also, it’s great to cover up the skin when you need it to. From accessorizing it like a turban to around your neck, a scarf can be your knight in shining armor.

  1. Carry a trendy umbrella around

As much as my mother wants and forces me to carry an umbrella around, in reality, none of us would go through the trouble of having to carry an umbrella around wherever we go.  What if I tell you that you can use your umbrella to accessorize your outfit. Would you do it then? Carry around a fun umbrella, maybe one with polka dots or a pretty print on it.

  1. Not too long!

Make sure your outfits aren’t the maxi length. The preferred length would be below the knee but quite well above the ankles. Maybe right along the length of the knee or a slight bit longer would be ideal, but longer than that would end up being a painful hassle.

  1. Don’t opt for sandals.

As easy as it is wearing a pair of sandals to work or to school, getting them wet or muddy is downright disgusting. I find it absolutely yuck to have water or mud on my sandals that’ll eventually transfer to my feet and then to have it rub against my sandal. I suggest going for flats. You can opt for either water resistant or leather flats. Keep away from suede or flats made of very thin material that are likely to get soaked the minute you step out.

Hopefully, now you’re feeling a little bit more prepared to deal with the rain. It’s up to you to choose the colour and style combination that bests suits your mood and interests. Don’t let the rain stop you from looking your best!
