Staten Island’s Sri Lankan restaurants are bona fide dining destinations for food tourists. And Sanrasa in Tompkinsville tends to be the first venue visitors hit as they walk up Victory Boulevard fresh from the Ferry.
With hoppers (crepes of coconut flour-based pancakes cooked into a scoop) and fish buns on the menu, Sanrasa turns out aclassic brand of Ceylonese fare.
The chef, Lalith Gunasakara, has cooked curries and baked bread in the tiny kitchen here for about two years. But recently he became a partner in the operation along with Pushpika Lokuhewa and Thushari Dissanayaka.
The trio decided to add Mexican food to the menu.
“Because the neighborhood is mixed cultures,” explained Pushpika.
“The main thing we’re doing with this business is to show the people how amazing Sri Lankan food is…”
Lalith produces both cuisines from a single kitchen.
“We deliver all over Staten Island,” promised Pushpika. And, he hopes to expand the business with its private parties and catering.
“The main thing we’re doing with this business is to show the people how amazing Sri Lankan food is — that’s the main goal,” said a smiling Thushari.
