Power cuts & You! –The Beauty Edition

Last week I wrote an article about hot weather and you! Which seems like it’s right on time and very much needed with our prevailing power cuts. This week I like to take it up a notch and speak about little things we can do to survive in a power cut. It’s like part 2 to my last week’s article. So its power cuts and how to survive it ‘beautifully’.

  1. If at home have a bath even twice- it will cool you down even a little bit and give you some relief from the heat. It will also leave you feeling clean and fresh and stop your hair from getting greasy and oily. This is best for those at home during a 5 hour power cut. Washing your hair twice is not going to make you sick contrary to popular belief in Sri Lanka. It’s so hot here and it’s the tropics, bathing regularly won’t make you sick. It’s necessary! Some people do believe that it’s not good for you and that’s not true. And if your worried it will dry out your hair make sure to always use a conditioner every time you bathe and if you have dry hair then you can shampoo only your scalp and not your ends. Scalp releases a lot of sebum and leaves your head feeling oily and gross.
  1. Put your makeup on in the car- you have somewhere important to go and there is no electricity at home? So annoying! The car is a good option. Now this one is tough, I know cause I’ve tried it.. The mirror is tiny and if it’s at night the car light seems so week. But it’s better than doing it inside your house without any power cause a) you’ll be sweating like crazy b) if it’s night you can’t see anything. So just do a light do in your car and your ready to go.
  1. The car a/c is not an option then try doing your makeup first and then jump in the shower for a quick body wash and be careful not to wet your face. This will only work if you have a hand held shower (one with a cord) as opposed to a fixed rain shower.
  1. This one I LOVE! Put your makeup on once you get to your location- this will work if you are meeting some friends at a restaurant or have an event at a hotel. Cause most fancy restaurants and hotels have a/c in their bathrooms. No power at home? Just take your vanity case in your hand bag and put your makeup on in the little ladies room and your all good to go.. No smudgy makeup or sweaty creased up lines or eye liner all over with this option.
  2. Can’t plug in your straighter or curler? Oh damn- I hate this. But opt for doing a real quick top knot or a braid. It’s super cute and all you need are some Bobbi pins and a hair tie. No electricity required! It may not be your number one option for your hair but what can we do with no power it’s still better than having all frizzed up hair. I personally need to style my hair if I’m going for an event/night out and feel this is an easy and practical option.
  1. Wet hair and no dryer!! This sucks. Sometimes you don’t know when power will go and right as you jump out of the shower the electricity goes and you have to be somewhere and can’t go with wet in-styled hair. Of course first towel dry it as much as possible and then you could opt for a wet look and I know this doesn’t work for everyone. It doesn’t work for me but it’s for those with nice thick hair or nice curly hair. Just put some hair serum and some setting spray and rock that wet look. Again not for everyone!
  1. Opt for a simple look- in these power cuts try to do something easy and that your good at. For instance some bb cream or foundation and a powder for your base and some blush. Skip the contour and highlight routine and just keep it simple with some bronzer. For the eyes you can always just do a bold cat eye and some mascara and your good to go. And this will go with any lip colour you want to rock. Smokey eyes not recommended while when everything around is on fire. Lol! Any look that needs a lot of blending needs light and time, so I’d say it he cat eye liner only is a super option.
  1. If at home and you’re super bored, here are some cool DIY beauty stuff you can do. (Only applicable during the day cause at night you can’t see!)

Face mask

You can make your own face mask using yoghurt from your fridge. This is really cooling in the heat and your putting your yoghurt to good use because without power your yoghurt is probably going to go bad anyway!

Do your nails

You can always give yourself a home manicure. All you need is some seas salts, some scrub and a brush. And then put some hand cream and put on a nice nail colour of your choice.

Have a home spa day

You can always make or use a body scrub you have for this.  Use this time to spend some time in the shower. If you have a tub – have a bubble bath! You can do a full body scrub or even do your grooming like shaving etc. you can go that next step by doing a hair mask/oil treatment/conditioning treatment at home. This is a fun way to let the time pass.

Clean your makeup brushes

In this amazing time of not having electricity let’s hope we have water (because many of the things I’ve mentioned require at least that). Assuming there is, you can use this time to clean out all your makeup sponges and brushes. You can just mix dish wash along with olive oil and make a mixture. And you can wash all your brushes in this. 2 parts dish wash to 1 part olive oil. And it’s an amazing substitute to the MAC brush cleanser 🙂

Hope this was helpful. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask me. I’m here and happy to help.
