Everything else.. Where to Witness The Brightest Supermoon in 70 years

Where to Witness The Brightest Supermoon in 70 years

2016 Nov 14

Everyone- and I mean everyone – is abuzz about the supermoon happening today! What’s a supermoon you ask? Simple. Basically, a supermoon occurs when the full moon is closest to Earth and today, the supermoon will be the closest it has been in almost 70 years! With the year 2016 bringing the world into supposed chaos, all of us could use a wonder like this right about now.

So where can we see the magnificent supermoon from? Advisably, try and go somewhere dark and with less light since other lights may diminish the brightness of the supermoon.

And now, this bit is for you poor unfortunate souls (like me) who couldn’t go on a vacation on this splendid long weekend. But cheer up! The supermoon will definitely make this brief holiday an unforgettable one!

Walk upstairs and lie down on your rooftops- that’s all you need to do

If you’re too lazy to get your couch-potato-self out the front door, I totally get where you’re coming from. Really. Nonetheless, you don’t have to miss out on this event just because your energy levels seemingly failed you. Just grab a bean bag or a some paduru and the fluffiest pillows you can find and go lie down on your rooftop. That’s all you need to do!

Take a relaxing walk along the beach

For the ones who live near the beach; you lucky sons of….. never mind. Just grab someone to keep you company and head straight for the beach this evening because there is no way you are not seeing this supermoon tonight! (Also, tonight would be the perfect night to make a grand romantic gesture at the beach, so significant others, get cracking!)

Take in the beauty of the city and the supermoon at Viharamahadevi

park

You could drop by Jagro, munch on some delicious waffles and just go to Viharamahadevi Park and enjoy a perfect stroll this wonderful night.

Kites, lights and spectacular sights at Galle Face Green!

Of course, the best place to be in Colombo is at Galle Face Green! Amidst the kites, various other flying thingamajigs and the bright city lights, the supermoon, in all honesty, may not be at its best. However, it will still take your breath away and definitely get you to  whip your phones out and snap a few shots! So, isso wade anyone?

However, since this weekend has (Thank God!) been a long weekend, many of you must be away from home and on the outskirts of Colombo. If you’re vacationing in Lanka’s countryside, you’re in luck.

Sri Lanka’s Countryside + Supermoon = BEST VACAY EVERRR!!!!!

One of the most ideal places to view this spectacular sight from is World’s End and Horton Plains. The weather is probably a tad bit colder than you’d prefer, but hey! It is so extremely worth it! You can lay back and seep in the wonderful sight in the midst of nature, and you may even come across leopards and Sambar deers at the same time! Gather around the campfire folks, and watch the supermoon to the tunes of Mama Bohama Bayawuna!

Trinco, deck chairs and batter fried cuttlefish!

If you want to escape the cold and enjoy the warm sandy shores of Sri Lanka, Trincomalee is the best place to be. In addition to seeing some of the most breath-taking sunrises, you can witness the supermoon today with ease! Surrounded by friends, family, the soft sound of waves breaking the shore, and a big platter of batter-fried cuttlefish; ah, you’ve seen the good life my friend.

Hideaway in remote Meemure and Ussangoda

If you wanted to go somewhere not that crowded and ended up at Ussangoda or Meemure, not to worry! Since these areas are more remote than Colombo is, you’d probably get the best seats for the show!

If you decide to hit the sack early today or somehow find yourself unable to be a part of this wonder, there’ll be another supermoon on December 14th, so don’t fret if you miss this one. However, it won’t be as big as the one tonight…. So try not to miss it guys!
