What It’s Like to be A Teacher

2017 Nov 18

From their gentle scolding to long lectures about life, there is definitely something special about Sri Lankan teachers. As students, we spend more than twelve years in school, and while friends may come and go, one thing certainly remains constant in our lives – the presence of an inspiring, dedicated and wonderful teacher!

Teachers tend to have a huge influence on our lives, which is something we may realize only once we’re older! It’s well-known that Lankan teachers simply do a lot more than impart knowledge. Their job roles are unbelievably diverse. They share the best advice, tidbits about their own experiences and give us life lessons. Over the years, regardless of what subject they taught or how they taught it, they have incorporated many life lessons along the way. Although students may be skeptical about this when they are young, these life lessons stick with us no matter how old we get.

By far the most unique things about our Sri Lankan teachers is how attentive they can be, regardless of the situation. Whether a student is in need of extra help, having trouble, or being bullied, a teacher will never fail to notice – especially when someone is not paying attention in class! They do all this while teaching lessons, writing notes, and grading papers, a remarkable feat in itself!

A Sri Lankan teacher will always smile and say good morning to you, no matter how bad his/her own day may be going. Regardless of why a child might need help, the response will always be patient, kind, and understanding. They wake up super early each morning, simply to do their best and ensure every child receives the best learning experience. The bottom line is that it’s impossible to know what it’s truly like to be a teacher, unless you are one!

No matter how old you get, a Sri Lankan teacher will always remember her students and we will never forget those few teachers who paid us a little extra attention, inspired us, and helped us when we most needed it. Teachers play the biggest role in shaping our goals, dreams, and personalities, all for one simple reason – they care. They care about our lives, our habits, and especially about our homework!

So regardless of the all the hardships every teacher faces on a daily basis, a teacher’s job is one of the most fulfilling and life shaping tasks one can think of. Well into our careers, we will still be thinking about our nursery school teacher and how patient she was with the naughty, raucous kids that we were. We will never forget the teacher who made us passionate about the subject she loved. There may be downsides to the job, but the upsides are fulfilling, the upsides are beautiful, the upsides are worth it. So here’s raising a toast to every teacher out there and saying, from the bottoms of our hearts – thankyou.
