2016 May 15
This is it, the final push! The weather window finally opened up and Johan & Jayanthi began their final ascent to the SUMMIT of Mt. Everest at 4.00 AM today Sunday, the 15th of May.
Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala and Johann Peiris who began the expedition in late March are the first 2 Sri lankans to attempt Mount Everest.
After succesfully reaching Camps 01, 02 & 03, the teams came back to Base Camp and are now in their attempt in reaching the summit. This is the first time in 3 long years that a team is making the final ascent to the world’s tallest peak, after fatal avalanches cut short the 2014 and 2015 campaigns.
Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala is a Senior Programme Officer at Women and Media Collective by profession, and Johann Peiris is a renowned Stylist. Jayanthi said that it was a childhood dream of hers to climb the Mount Everest.
“It is way tougher than what I expected it to be”, said Johann.
Depending on the weather, they are scheduled to reach the peak around Friday, the 20th of May.
Check out below what they had to say just before leaving basecamp for the Final Ascent.
