“A Mother’s Love in Every Bite”
Located in the historic streets of Galle Fort, Amma Nissa is a lovely tribute to family heritage. Named in honour of the owner’s mother, this spot is all about celebrating the timeless recipes that have been passed down for generations. The restaurant does a great job of offering two different vibes depending on your mood. Downstairs is full of lively energy where you can watch the rotti station buzz, while upstairs is a refined and cosy escape that gives you peaceful views of the fort streets. What makes Amma Nissa special is how it brings the soul of home cooking to the southern coast. Signature dishes, like Amma’s Mutton Curry and the authentic Rice and Curry, also prove that this is where the soul of home cooking meets the heart of the southern coast.
Appetisers
Beef and Cheese Murtaba – LKR 2,500 (5/5)
This dish immediately sets the benchmark for comfort food, earning its flawless five-star rating. The Beef and Cheese Murtaba is one of the indulgent culinary experiences at Amma Nissa because its generous filling is richer and even cheesier than their mozzarella rotti. Inside, the star is the juicy minced beef, perfectly seasoned with sweet and spicy notes that harmonise seamlessly with the generous layer of cheese. Garnished with fresh mint and coriander leaves, the presentation looked simple yet elegant.
Polos Cutlets (3 pcs) – LKR 1,350 (4.5/5)
These Polos Cutlets are a brilliant twist on a beloved local snack. Far from the typical spherical cutlets, these are thoughtfully shaped and boast a crispiness that might just be controversial, but they deliver a better, more satisfying crispy edge than the standard Sri Lankan fare. The cutlets, featuring a comforting mix of potatoes, carrots and young jackfruit (polos), are served with a side of classic tomato sauce. The flavour profile is expertly balanced and the subtle sweetness contributed by the carrots harmonises perfectly with the earthy notes of the potato and polos. This is an absolute treat for vegetarians and the presentation is topped with a sprinkle of fried green chilli and onions on top. Even though the cutlets have a great crispy edge, the thin crust means they can get soggy easily over time, so it is definitely better to eat them while they are hot to enjoy the texture.
Mains
Hand Tossed Paratha – LKR 300 [1 pc] (4/5)
Sometimes, the simplest things are the best, and Amma Nissa’s Paratha proves this perfectly. This classic crowd favourite is served on a banana leaf, which is a lovely traditional touch. Their paratha is a triumph of texture because it’s perfectly layered, soft, and flaky. However, it doesn’t have an extraordinary taste and we felt like it needed to be paired with something else to really shine, rather than being a standalone star. It’s truly meant to be enjoyed alongside the mutton curry. It acts as the perfect soft piece to soak up all that incredible gravy, making the whole meal complete.
Mozzarella rotti – LKR 1,400 [1 pc] (4.5/5)
This dish looks exactly like a classic Sri Lankan egg rotti, topped with a pleasing garnish of fresh coriander leaves and green onions, and layered with cheese. Given the name, one might expect a significant cheesy punch. However, the flavour leans more towards a subtle milky richness than a sharp, dominant cheese profile. When compared to the beef and cheese murtaba, which was significantly cheesy, we felt the mozzarella rotti could have been much cheesier, as the name suggests. Despite this slight difference from expectation, this rotti proves to be a game-changer when correctly paired. It is absolutely brilliant alongside Amma’s mutton curry and the soft base acts as the perfect vehicle for the rich, spiced gravy.
Amma’s Mutton Curry – LKR 3,900 (5/5)
Named “Amma’s Mutton Curry” for a reason, every spoonful tastes exactly like home. This rich, comforting, and deeply satisfying dish easily ranks among their very best. The mutton is cooked to perfection, incredibly tender and juicy, having fully absorbed the intricate blend of spices. The flavour profile is creamy and rich, with the unmistakable taste of coconut milk standing out prominently. Their precise use of spices takes the dish to another level, making it complex yet harmonious. Presented with a vibrant garnish of red pepper, coriander leaves, and a drizzle of cooling curd, this curry is an excellent representation of authentic, high-quality Sri Lankan cooking.
Hot butter Cuttlefish – LKR 3,500 (3.5/5)
This cuttlefish dish arrives beautifully presented, with vibrant, shredded green, yellow, and red bell peppers and chopped green onion making the dish quite a spectacle. The cuttlefish is coated in a batter and delivers an initial crispiness. However, the experience is slightly hampered by the coating because the batter itself is quite thick, giving an unnecessarily strong flour taste. This prevented the dish from fully showcasing the wonderful natural texture of the cuttlefish, which is that bouncy, chewy quality that is so enjoyable in fresh seafood.
Chilli Garlic XL Black Tiger Prawns [1 pc] – LKR 1,950 (4/5)
When dining down south, sampling the local seafood is mandatory, and this prawn dish is one of the strongest contenders to introduce Amma Nissa’s fresh selection. The dish arrives beautifully, served over a vibrant chilli garlic sauce and topped with a colourful mix of shredded red and yellow bell peppers and leek. The prawn itself is outstandingly fresh and juicy and they boast that satisfying bouncy texture that speaks volumes about their quality and freshness. The sweet chilli garlic sauce provides a strong, exciting spiced flavour that perfectly complements the subtle sweetness of the fresh seafood. This is a mandatory order for any seafood enthusiast and a brilliant celebration of the coastal catch, though the price of LKR 1,950 for a single piece can feel a bit excessive.
Fish Rice & Curry – LKR 2,000 (5/5)
For anyone seeking the purest taste of home, Amma Nissa’s Rice and Curry is an absolute necessity. Given Galle’s reputation for stellar Sri Lankan cuisine, it is clear Amma Nissa understands the assignment perfectly, delivering an authentic dish in the best traditional manner. This plate is a vibrant spread of culinary essentials, featuring creamy dhal curry, rich brinjal moju, a fresh salad of cucumber, carrot, and onion, tempered potato, and crispy papadam, all served alongside perfectly cooked white rice. The entire ensemble blends harmoniously, creating a deeply satisfying meal. While every component plays its part, the fish curry stands out as the star, being rich and flavourful. To truly honour this classic and experience it in the best Sri Lankan way, make sure to ditch the cutlery and enjoy this masterpiece by hand. This dish is easily recommended to anyone looking for an authentic and unforgettable local meal.
Desserts
Pol Pani Pancake – LKR 1,500 [1 pc] (4.5/5)
If you want to enjoy the Coconut-Jaggery-Milkshake, this dessert could easily be its sweet counterpart. The pancake dessert is pure heaven, pairing two soft Sri Lankan pancakes with rich pol peni (treacle) nestled between them, served alongside two generous scoops of vanilla ice cream.
This dessert is a masterpiece of textures and temperatures. The chewiness of the pancake contrasts wonderfully with the sweet pol pani and the cold vanilla ice cream, creating a sensational mouthfeel that is instantly addictive. The quality of the treacle and the creamy ice cream is excellent, harmonising perfectly with the warm, comforting pancakes. Since this is served with ice cream, you cannot exactly take your sweet time while eating. Once the ice cream melts and mixes with the pol pani, it doesn’t quite deliver the same distinct taste, though there will certainly be people who actually prefer that melted combination.
Fruit salad – LKR 1,500 (4/5)
This dessert is undoubtedly the most visually stunning dish on the table and a vibrant and colourful feast for the eyes. Their fruit salad is a brilliant medley featuring perfectly fresh pieces of papaya, mango, strawberry, and a mix of crisp green and purple grapes, all arranged with care. The presentation is exceptional because this vibrant fruit selection is served attractively nestled within a halved coconut shell, which is an authentic and wonderful touch. It would have been even better if the fruit was served with a bit of lemon juice or some syrup drizzled over it to really elevate the natural flavours. Even without that extra touch, it remains a refreshing and healthy way to cleanse the palate after a spicy and rich Sri Lankan meal.
Drinks
Watermelon Juice – LKR 1,200 (4/5)
When seeking a natural, refreshing drink, the Watermelon Juice is an absolute winner. This drink focuses entirely on the natural flavour of the fruit, delivering a perfect palate cleanser. The drink is served with a piece of fresh watermelon adorning the glass. It’s refreshing and also avoids being overly sweet. While it is a very solid and cooling choice, there wasn’t anything particularly extraordinary as it is just the usual watermelon drink you would expect.
Mint & Lime Cooler – LKR 1,200 (4/5)
This drink is all about the classic pairing of mint and lime and this is a truly refreshing way to combat a hot day on the coast. It is nicely garnished with a fresh lime and mint piece on the glass. It delivers a very strong, pronounced sour taste and a potent wave of mint that provides an immediate, zesty refreshment. While this intense flavour profile may not be to everyone’s liking, it is undeniably effective for beating the heat. Overall, this drink is a bold and refreshing choice, perfect for those who enjoy a significant sour kick.
Coconut and Jaggery Milkshake – LKR 1,500 (5/5)
This drink truly deserves the title of ‘best drink’ on the menu, offering a rich yet subtly flavoured experience. Its presentation is lovely, with some jaggery drizzled inside the glass and a fresh coconut piece resting on the rim. The base, made with coconut milk, is wonderfully creamy and is topped with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. The natural sweetness from the jaggery boosts the overall taste, creating a truly comforting beverage. The true magic of this drink is that even if coconut flavour is not usually your preference, you are bound to enjoy this.
Ambience
Amma Nissa successfully creates two atmospheres, catering to different dining moods. The ground floor presents a dynamic, casual setting, with a space defined by an interplay between a rustic clay wall, illuminated by the signature yellow neon sign, and a vibrant graffiti wall on the opposite. The central dining area has tables decorated with vases of water lilies, which adds a fresh and lively feel. A major attraction is the open rotti station, offering diners a fascinating view of the preparation. The experience is elevated by a striking, colonial-style staircase leading to the upper floor. This room serves as a transition, welcoming guests into a small art gallery before opening into a second, more reserved dining area. This upstairs space is noticeably quieter, designed with a luxurious and cosy aesthetic. It serves as an ideal retreat for either group dining or solitary meals, providing the added benefit of picturesque views of the Galle Fort streets. To make the experience even better, the staff is really friendly and attentive, making sure you feel welcome from the moment you walk in.
