Smash burgers, done the classic Aussie way!
Smashy brings a bite-sized piece of Australian diner culture to Sri Lanka, with outlets at One Galle Face Mall, Arcade Independence Square and Havelock City Mall. The culinary genie behind this wish, Jesse Aston is a proper foodie who set out to recreate the classic Aussie smash burger, right here in Sri Lanka.
The beef is fully imported from Australia for its distinct flavour and every single sauce is made in-house to keep things fresh, simple and consistent.
Smashy was also built to stay affordable, giving you proper diner-style burgers without breaking the bank.
Keeping things simple, it leans into bold flavours, fresh ingredients and those messy, diner-style sauces that elevate the smash burger. From the first bite, it’s the comfort food you didn’t realise you were craving.
So let’s dive right in and see what these burgers have to say.
Burgers
Animal Style – LKR 1,450 (5/5)
A true diner-style classic, this smash burger is a hearty burst of flavour. From the very first bite, the sauce is a star player. Their signature burger sauce adds a creamy, savoury kick all the way through.
The smashed beef has those crispy edges and a juicy centre, seasoned well and paired beautifully with the salty melt of the cheese.
The quality of the ingredients stand-out with the lettuce and tomato adding a fresh crunch while the pickles bring a sweet-tangy bite that cuts right through the richness.
An easy 5/5, this is a solid smash burger that’ll leave you wanting more.
Truff Guy – LKR 1,450 (4/5)
True to its name, this burger packs a spicy punch. At first glance, the vibrant red of their in-house truffle hot sauce promises a kick and spread evenly, it gives every bite that sweet, tangy heat.
The pickles and caramelised onion do a great job cutting through the spice, bringing freshness and sweetness to balance everything out. Though, the spice does take-over, sometimes overpowering the other flavours.
The creamy mayo and salty cheddar, works to mellow the heat and the bun, toasted just right and slightly sweet works perfectly here.
If you’re looking for a spicy treat, this is your go-to.
Rookie – LKR 1,200 (4/5)
Rookie is your OG smash burger. With a juicy beef patty, crispy edges and a soft centre, grilled onions, pickles and plenty of Smashy burger sauce, it has everything you’d look for in a classic favourite.
Though a bit plain, the saltiness of the cheese works well with the sweet creaminess of the sauce and all the flavours come together well.
It’s nothing fancy nor extra; just a solid, satisfying smash burger.
Buff Daddy – LKR 1,450 (5/5)
Stuffed with a generous portion of tender chicken, this burger is full of flavour from the very first bite. The sweet, tangy buffalo sauce coats the chicken evenly, with the sweet hitting first, balanced by the kick of heat that follows.
The fresh pickle cuts through the richness, keeping the flavours bright, while the ranch adds a smooth, creamy layer throughout the burger.
Another solid 5/5 — it’s a must-have that’ll definitely have you coming back for more.
Fadeaway – LKR 1,450 (4/5)
Savory, spiced Peri Peri chicken in an evenly toasted bun makes this a proper fusion burger. Layered with sweet pineapple relish and creamy avocado purée, it brings together strong flavours that work.
The sharp cheddar boosts the chicken’s flavour and the slight kick from the jalapenos adds just the right amount of heat. While the fresh lettuce, pickles, avocado and pineapple add balance the chicken is seasoned a bit too salty.
If you’re into salty, bold, adventurous fusion flavours, this one is right up your alley.
The Playbook – LKR 1,100 (4/5)
Seasoned, crispy chicken on a fresh bed of lettuce, dripping in creamy mayo; what’s not to like?
Despite the burger’s simplicity, their original fried chicken takes the spotlight here and with two generous layers of mayo, the texture ends up perfectly creamy.
It’s basically their three-ingredient specialty and it works.
Simple, classic and delicious!
Sides
Fries – LKR 600 (5/5)
Served warm and golden, their thick-cut fries are a treat on their own.
Crispy on the outside, soft and airy in the centre and salted just right; it’s the kind of fry you keep reaching for without thinking.
Definitely a must-have with the burgers!
Mash Potato and Gravy – LKR 650 (4/5)
The savory, rich gravy blends perfectly with the creamy, soft mashed potatoes. It’s warm, hearty and genuinely satisfying with every spoonful.
While the gravy itself is quite strong, the light sprinkle of coriander adds a minty kick that cuts through the richness.
A comforting choice for anyone who enjoys bold, savoury flavours.
Ambiance
Smashy sits tucked into a cozy little corner inside Food Studio at One Galle Face; a cute burger stall with real diner vibes. The wooden counter, bright signage and simple setup make it feel a little like you’ve stepped into an Aussie-style takeaway spot right in the middle of the mall.
It’s the kind of place you swing by when you want something quick, comforting and easy on the wallet in between all the shopping chaos. There isn’t much of a “sit-down ambience” to talk about, but it works perfectly for what it is: a relaxed spot to grab a solid burger, hang out and take a breather before heading back into the shopping hustle.
Did You Know?
All the beef is imported from Australia for that distinct flavour and you can actually taste the difference.
