What we had
The Mad Hatter’s quirky dinner!
We’re all madly in love with Bella’s new little space, The Blue Velvet, which is both a wonderland high-tea and dinner venue. The decor, the colours and the ambience; an indescribable concoction of its own. I’ve been to so many restaurants in Colombo and had so many varied experiences but the one I had when I walked through those doors was a whole new ride. The entire two hours I spent there, every dish, every piece of art was a hidden adventure on its own.
They share the space with the cafe, Bakes by Bella so don’t get confused when looking for the place. You walk through Bakes by Bella, into The Blue Velvet.
Appetizers
Spicy Nyonya Laksa Soup: Chicken – LKR 650
This was hands-down one of the spiciest Laksas I have had. I’ve always preferred the one at Noodles, but this one has officially won my heart now. The base of the soup was creamy and had a strong coconut flavour to it too. If you’re looking for something spicy, this one we’d recommend.
Pan Fried Scallops on a bed of creamy spinach with salted egg told sauce – LKR 850
Firstly, that presentation! The dish was beautifully plated, a trio of scallops over salted egg told on one side and a garden salad on the other. The scallops were made just right, they weren’t overcooked nor dry. It was my first time trying salted egg told sauce, and its dangerously addictive!
Mains
Grilled Rack of Lamb on a bed of cheesy purple yam and mushroom sauce – LKR 2650
This menu, curated and perfected offers 2 meat dishes that hit the high notes; Grilled lamb and Short ribs. We had an Insta-poll because we couldn’t decide between the two, and our followers chose Lamb for us. Boy, were we excited! The dish was incredible, from presentation, to texture of the meat, and the accompaniments. We’re going to leave more details a mystery for you to unwind.
Honey Glazed Chicken Tapioca Gratin – LKR 1200
I’m not a huge fan of gratin but we weren’t disappointed with this one. It wasn’t your basic potato gratin either, because instead, they opted for tapioca. The gratin itself had the texture of a puff pastry that sat right on top. Sandwiched inside were huge chunks of fried honey glazed chicken that we loved!
Bakes by Bella on the other side has got you covered for dessert!

Tip: the lamb is amazing!
