Father’s day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June everywhere around the world. If you didn’t know that father’s day is on the 19th, that’s pretty much in a few couple of days, you don’t have to worry. If this information has now started to freak you out about what to get you dad, we’ve got that covered for you as well.

You see, in my opinion, I don’t think fathers get all that appreciation – as much as they should get. Mother’s day is advertised everywhere, from florists to spas, but father’s day, not so much. After some careful research, we’ve come up with a few gift ideas for your dad that’ll make you his favourite child. Isn’t that what we all aim for, eh? Daddy’s boy or daddy’s little princess.

  • A DIY surprise

If you’re on a tight budget but still want to give your dad something special to show him how much you love him, a handmade DIY gift made with love is the best way to go. Its both cost-effective and thoughtful. Even if you’re not on the very creative side of things, a simple card or framed photo won’t be tedious to make.

Pinterest has got tons of DIY gift ideas. From cute looking card to picture collages in father’s day inspired themes, there’s a whole bunch of inspiration you can get from it. If you’re dad is into sports or has a specific hobby, you can put together a photo collage of him in his natural habitat – lets say fishing- that’ll turn into a fun and thoughtful gift idea.

  • Food is the way to his heart

Men and food are equivalents in any equation. Give a man good food and you’ve found the way to his heart. There’s nothing more your old man is going to love than some good feast sunday brunch or some hearty dinner. So many hotels in Colombo have an amazing line-up of Father’s day brunch and High Tea. Since it’s Sunday, it’s an added advantage that most hotels in Colombo have their massive Sunday Brunch, whether it be Caviar and Oyster or Sri Lankan delicacies. The Kingsbury hotel has recently been advertising their father’s day lineup. You’ve got to check it out, there’s even a sing-along happening with Corrine! Your dad would love spending time with you, with good food and great company. Call up a couple of hotels before making reservations. Ask them if they have promos for Father’s day, if they don’t look into some that do. But if your dad already loves Sunday Brunch at a certain hotel, skip the research part, make a reservation and take him there.

You don’t neccasirliy have to spend a ton of money on some good food either.Team up with your mom and make some dishes you dad loves. If he’s a full on Sri Lankan curry supporter, maybe some black pork curry or some well made chicken curry is enough to put a smile on his face.

  • A gadget it is

This is a quite an expensive choice, but since this article focuses both on ease and convenience as well when buying the product, we thought it wouldn’t really be all that unfair to fit the ‘Electronic Items’ category into the list. Maybe it’s the latest iPhone, if he’s a reader, then maybe it’s something like a Kindle Fire (this option however, will take some time to ship) or maybe it’s something as cool as the Samsung Galaxy Gear. If you have a budget as big, go online, look through a couple of the online electronic items sites and pick what you think your dad’s going to like the best.

Tip: Since you would be spending quite a load of money, make sure you know what your dad likes best. It’s not worth it buying something hoping he might like it. Look out for credit card deals and store promos while you’re at it!

  • Wine anyone?

Alright, if you’re too young to drink, do not go with this option. Abort mission immediately, we don’t want things to get awkward. If you’re not, tempt your  Dad’s palate with a bottle of fine wine, whether he prefers rich reds, refreshing whites or crisp rosés. If you want to make it all the more special this year for you father, opt for selections that come from family estates where winemaking skills are handed down from generation to generation. Maybe a JCB by Jean-Charles Boisset No. 21 if your dad likes sparkling or a Ritual 2015 Pinot Noir if he likes Red.

  • Spending on time.

What better gift to get your dad than a watch! Something he’s going to have with him for a very long time and probably, something he’s going to wear to work every single day. And unlike an electronic item, you can never go wrong with a watch. If your dad doesn’t like it now, he’s bound to grow into liking it! You can probably check out the International Watches stores around Colombo, or even visit the online pages of Softlogic or W.A.De Silva & Co. to find something your dad would like. The latter however, don’t offer a wide collection in their e-store as does the former. I’m only suggesting that you go through the pages in these sites to get an idea on the pricing and make of the watch you want to buy for your dad.

Tip: Before deciding on a brand, take a look at the brand of the watch your dad wears every day. The watch he considers his top possession. Chances are, this is the brand he prefers over the rest. Then, go do your research and find a watch to settle into your budget and your taste preferences.
