Bappa’s Wok is quite difficult to locate. It’s to the left of the Mount Lavinia Ceypetco petrol station when heading towards Colombo. They share the building with a lightning shop, Bixton International.

Your two favorite types of food prep under one roof!

Our experience at Bappa’s Wok and Grill was not the best. Firstly, the place is quite difficult to locate. They operate off the basement of a larger lighting shop. Secondly, the place smells quite musky and the whole restaurant had a weird stench to it, which you wouldn’t appreciate with your dinner. Thirdly, their service is poor. The food took longer to arrive and the staff was not attentive. Additionally, the cutlery, the cups and plates were very dusty and caused us to physically clean it out with tissue before using them.

If our experience wasn’t already as bad as it could be, their food was our biggest disappointment. The flavors in the mains were not balanced at all and presentation was sloppy.

Appetizers

Prawn Toast – LKR 350

The prawn toast was a thin slice of bread, layered with a whole ton of ketchup, cheese and finally topped with a meager, over fried prawn on top. The poor thing looked pathetic over the piece of bread. Because of the excess of ketchup, the slice of toast was inedible and soggy. In terms of presentation too, this was a 1/10.

Hot Butter Citrus Wings – LKR 300

We decided to order these wings because the name of the dish was quite interesting. As opposed to the classic “Hot Butter Cuttlefish”, this was a Hot Butter Citrus chicken wing. Sadly, this dish was a disappointment. The wings were over-fried and it was also incredibly oily. The ‘citrus’ in this comes from a citrus dressing that was too citrusy and unbalanced. The wings had no seasoning or flavor whatsoever, and the same applied to the dressing.

Mains

We decided to try dishes from the wok and the grill.

Mongolian Chicken Rice – LKR 450

The Mongolian Options are from their ‘Wok’. Surprisingly, the Mongolian Chicken Rice was the only recommendable dish we tried that was nice. This dish was not shabby at all, it had flavor, the chicken was fried and overall, the rice was delicious. A complete turn of events!

Mongolian Prawn Noodles – LKR 550

We had high hopes for this noodle because the Mongolian rice was so great. We spoke to soon, this dish was a disappointment. It tasted only of soy sauce, the seafood was not fresh and was over-fried to glory and the dish had no flavor or depth whatsoever. It baffles me how the rice was actually pretty nice but how this was the complete opposite.

Grilled Beef Steak – LKR 900

For LKR 900, you are served a good enough serving of steak, boiled veggies and fries. In order of least important to most, the veggies were under-boiled. We have no complains over the fries. Actually, the fries were the only thing we ended up finishing in this dish. The steak was way over well-done and had reached the point of being over cooked. The meat was tough, chewy and dry.

Have you been to Bappa’s Wok and Grill yet? Let us know what you think of it in the comments below! Is there anything we’ve missed?

Tip: If you do find yourself here, then order the Mongolian Chicken Rice.
