A Little Parisian Escape in Negombo
Negombo is usually known for its love affair with Italy. But this little French bakery has quietly entered the scene with a very different kind of charm. Open for just three months, Monde French Bakery brings a slice of France to the city, serving up everything from buttery croissants and artisan breads to elegant desserts and pastries.
The secret behind the French flair? It starts with the ingredients. Premium French butter, flour and carefully sourced ingredients really bring out that classic French bakery experience, while traditional techniques like slow fermentation and precise pastry work keep every bite consistent.
We also stepped inside to take a behind-the-scenes look at the craft, with expert chefs working away in a space that is impressively clean and organised.
The Instagrammable café setup makes it an easy spot for a morning coffee, a pastry break or a slow catch-up over dessert.
Plain Croissant – LKR 460 (5/5)
This croissant sets the bar ridiculously high for what a croissant should be.
The first bite shatters into dozens of crisp, buttery layers before giving way to a light and airy centre.
There’s just a touch of sweetness, but the rich buttery flavour is what steals the show. Every bite tastes fresh, flaky and indulgent without feeling heavy.
It’s the kind of pastry that’s meant to be shared but somehow disappears before that ever happens.
Supreme Croissant – White Chocolate – LKR 650 (4/5)
This is what happens when a croissant decides it wants to become dessert.
This treat takes a perfectly flaky croissant and turns it into a full-blown confectionery delight. Coated in silky white chocolate, topped with vanilla crumble and filled with smooth vanilla pastry cream, every bite is rich, buttery and seriously indulgent.
The sweetness never feels over the top thanks to the buttery pastry underneath. It could easily get away with being a little more generous with the filling because the vanilla cream is that good.
Multigrain Bread – LKR 750 (4/5)
This flips the script on what multigrain bread is expected to be. Instead of being dry and dense, it’s soft, fluffy and light.
Packed with flax, pumpkin and sunflower seeds within, and then topped with even more, it still has the pillowy texture of white bread while delivering all the goodness of a hearty multigrain loaf. However, the seeds on top of the loaf were a little bitter.
This multigrain bread feels wholesome without sacrificing comfort, making it an easy everyday choice.
Strawberry Cheesecake – LKR 1,100 (4/5)
This strawberry cheesecake is an absolute delight. The strawberry topping is made with real strawberries rather than a sugary syrup, bringing a natural tartness that brightens every bite. Underneath, the cheesecake is smooth, creamy and velvety.
The fresh strawberry cuts through the richness perfectly, so it never becomes overly sweet. It’s refreshing, balanced and dangerously easy to keep eating.
The base could have been firmer. It was more towards the soggy side.
Butterscotch Cake Slice – LKR 550 (5/5)
The vanilla sponge is incredibly soft and fluffy, layered with light vanilla buttercream and finished with a glossy butterscotch glaze that carries the slightest hint of salty tang.
That little touch of salt makes the butterscotch flavour pop even more, bringing out the caramel notes while keeping everything beautifully balanced.
It melts away with every bite. Perfect for someone who prefers cakes without too much icing and sweetness.
Hazelnut Velvet Cocoa – LKR 1,100 (5/5)
Shaped like a cocoa pod with its bright orange and yellow hue, it’s one of those trompe l’œil desserts that instantly catches your eye long before the first bite. Thankfully, the flavour lives up to the presentation.
Built on a tart base, a crisp shell gives way to a layer of soft chocolate sponge, silky milk chocolate mousse and a rich hazelnut centre that ties everything together.
Every layer feels smooth, creamy and perfectly balanced. Rich enough to feel luxurious but never so sweet that it becomes heavy, it’s easily one of the standout desserts on the menu.
Chocolate Éclair – LKR 450 (4/5)
Chocolate éclairs have become a must in pastry shops all around Sri Lanka. Instead of the usual smooth topping of its more boring contemporaries, this éclair is topped with a chocolate craquelin that adds a delicate crunch that gives the classic chocolate éclair a little extra personality.
Inside, it’s generously filled from end to end with velvety chocolate cream, so there’s no disappointing empty bite. But the filling could have had a richer chocolate taste.
Finished with whipped cream and chocolate crumble, it’s rich, creamy, and incredibly satisfying. For the price, it delivers far more than expected.
Coffee Éclair – LKR 460 (5/5)
This is an éclair that slowly wins you over. The coffee flavour starts off gentle before gradually becoming richer with every bite, leaving behind a smooth, aromatic finish without ever tasting bitter.
The coffee cream filling is packed in generously from end to end, making every bite consistently delicious. Finished with a glossy chocolate glaze, piped coffee cream, and a touch of edible gold leaf, it looks just as elegant as it tastes. Big on flavour, beautifully made, and well worth ordering.
Strawberry Éclair – LKR 480 (5/5)
It gets everything right. Light, airy pastry is packed with silky vanilla cream and a fresh strawberry filling that keeps every bite bright and balanced. The vanilla brings richness while the strawberry adds a burst of freshness, making the combination feel indulgent without becoming too heavy.
Finished with pink cream and strawberry crumble, it looks every bit as good as it tastes.
Ambience
Monde has that cosy French bakery charm that’s impossible not to love.
Warm lighting, wooden accents and soft earthy colours make the whole space feel calm and inviting, while the pastry display quietly tempts from the moment you walk in.
The big windows fill the café with natural light, giving it a bright, airy feel that’s perfect for lingering over coffee and dessert.
It strikes a nice balance between modern and cosy, creating the kind of place that makes “just one coffee” somehow turn into an hour-long visit.
