Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

2018 Mar 28

A true first for Galle International College, as it prepares for an all-student performance of the hit musical ‘Joseph’!

Galle International College unites an all-student diverse cast of 5 to 17 years old to perform hit musical ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ on the 28th and 29th of March at Galle’s 600-seat Hall de Galle – the international school’s first performance of its kind.

Set to get the audience’s toes tapping with its catchy music and lively dance routines, ‘Joseph’ will be performed for the first time ever in Galle by the boys and girls of Galle International College – a cast of over 40 students across 14 nationalities, including Sri Lankan – and will be backed by a six-piece band under the musical direction of the world-renowned Soundarie David Rodrigo.

The show represents a major achievement for the school and students involved and is the culmination of three months solid preparation. “At our school, we pride ourselves on inclusion and offering our students incredible opportunities for their development,” said Victoria Hislop, Principal of Galle International College.

“All students were invited to participate regardless of age and ability, with auditions held for the main parts. The students’ commitment and enthusiasm has been incredible and I would like to thank the school’s deputy Curtis Jobe, James Luck and Soundarie David Rodrigo – all of whom have a fantastic amount of experience in musical theatre – for directing and producing our first large-scale public production.”

Show director, James Luck added: “The entire cast has put in an enormous amount of work both into their song and dance. For the majority of them this will be their first time ever on stage and we look forward to setting the stage alight with a spectacular performance!”

Almost entirely sung-through, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ is a family-friendly story with familiar themes and instantly-memorable pop music – who can resist ‘Any Dream Will Do’ and ‘Close Every Door to Me’? – making it one of the most-enduring musicals of all time.

With lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber (both knighted for their services to music), the musical reimagines the story of Joseph, his father Jacob and 11 brothers from the Bible’s Book of Genesis and was first performed during the duo’s school days in 1968.
