Trail2016 Hosts Practice Walks for Volunteers

2016 Aug 22

Walk × Unite × Heal

14th August 2016, Colombo; A walk which was initiated back in 2011 in a bid to raise funds to develop a Cancer Hospital in Jaffna has yet again commenced its second phase of their promise by organizing a fund raiser walk to develop a cancer hospitals in Karapitiya Galle.

The co-founders of the Trail initiative Sarinda Unamboowe and Nathan Sivagananathan decided to unite the country in a fight against cancer by walking 670km, the length of Sri Lanka, to raise awareness and funding for a much needed cancer facility in Jaffna back in 2011. The walk in 2011 Dondra Head to Point Pedro spanned 27 days and saw over 30,000 participants and 250,000 supporters together raise over $ 2.6 Million. Their dream was realized when the Tellippalai Trail Cancer Hospital was opened in January 2014 and the facility succeeded at treating over 4,500 patients since its establishment.

This year they are walking back and looking to raise $5 Million to build a new facility for the cancer unit at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, Galle. This is a true partnership. Each fundraiser, donor and sponsor, along with the doctors and experts of the hospital, and the Government of Sri Lanka (who will match funds raised) will help see this dream fulfilled.

The practice walks which are organized to raise awareness among the community while encouraging participation will be hosted at-least once a week in and around Colombo. Anyone who wish to join and show their support could log on to www.trailsl.com or https://www.facebook.com/TrailSL/ for more details.

The practice walk on the 14th of August which commenced from Independence Square at 5:30am trailed through historic sites around Galle Face Green, Town Hall and Pettah concluding the session back at Independence Square. The event saw enthusiastic trail blazers complete a staggering 25km in view of keeping in good health and fitness to join the Trail2016 Walk on the 6th of October –2nd of November 2016.
