Avicii’s Cause of Death Confirmed as Suicide

2018 Apr 27

“He could not go on any longer”

The talented DJ and musician with fans across the world, Tim Bergling, or Avicii, as he was known, passed away tragically in Oman on Friday, the 20th of April. The past week was filled with mass speculation about his cause of death and millions of fans mourning his loss with touching tributes.

After conducting two autopsies, the police involved confirmed that no foul play was suspected. In a statement released yesterday, the 26th of April, Bergling’s family indicated that his cause of death was suicide.

Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions. An over-achieving perfectionist who travelled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress.

When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music.

He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness. He could not go on any longer.

He wanted to find peace. Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight. Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed. The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive.

We love you,

Your family

Bergling had in the past suffered from acute pancreatitis, led by excessive drinking. In 2014, he underwent procedures to have his gallbladder and appendix removed, and eventually retired from performing altogether in 2016, releasing a heartfelt letter to his fans.

His most popular and memorable hits include ‘Levels’ (2011) and ‘Wake Me Up’ (2013). Geffen Records’ Neil Jacobson revealed that Avicii had been working on a new album prior to his passing, which was to be “his best music in years”. The release plans for this project are as of yet unclear.

In an interview in 2013, the artist reflected on the toll his career had taken on him
“I’m tired, really tired,” he said. “I’ve been at it since I was 17, 18 years old…touring pretty much nonstop, 300 shows a year. It’s been very hectic…I need a break.”
