- Blend
This I feel is the most IMPORTANT of them all. When you are doing your makeup- try and give yourself the required time, depending on the look you are attempting. And in this time the thing you should be spending the most time doing is BLENDING. I can’t stress the importance of blending enough because this is the difference between a good makeup job vs. a sloppy “I look like a hot mess” look. Even salon professionals here in Sri Lanka don’t seem to be doing a too good of a job blending- cause at weddings you see guests with eye shadow that is just two colours showing in two strips- and that’s not a great look. May it be foundation, concealer, contour and your eye shadows- make sure you blend so it is seamless. An amazing tool to have when it comes to foundations, highlight & contour and powders is the beauty blender- It will change your makeup game. This tool allows you to seamlessly blend everything together even for a beginner.
- Match your lipstick to your eye shadow
So this would seem obvious to some, but for a few others not so much. Look, there are no real rules in makeup. Just do what you prefer! But having said that some like to follow certain guidelines and this allows them to achieve a look which is in one’s head, rather than just going in with any colour and just slapping something on. Again this is for those girls who want a classic Smokey eye paired with a nude lip or a fun bright eye look or cat liner and a bold lip. What I’m saying is either go ahead and match your lip colour at the end to the total look you’ve done on the eyes or plan ahead if you want to do a red lip or a bright berry lip. Cause if the lipstick colour is what your show stopper is, then reverse this and match you eye shadows to the lip stick you have in mind.
- Don’t forget your eye brows
This is hilarious. With all that foundation and eye shadow, you don’t draw in your eyebrows. Yikes! Not a great look. Sri Lankans have beautiful eye brows so don’t hide them under all that face makeup. Fill them in and define them so they frame your face. I think it’s important to also maintain and take care of your eye brows- not just draw them on. I am very particular who tackles my eyebrows. I get them threaded and I’m very obsessive about it. I even wait an extra week if I can’t get myself to my usual salon. I have ONE person who does my eye brows. I don’t go to anyone else, because it is so difficult to correct them/grow them back once they lose their shape. I have in the past had bad experiences by going to different salons on a whim. And now I never make that mistake, I have my trustee beauty therapist that does it for me and for the last 5 years only he has done them. It’s important to find someone who gets the shape that you like and this way there is some consistency. The guy I go to is one of the best in the industry for eye brows, so if you’re looking for someone then Shanuka Samaratunga at Cinnamon Grand Ramani Fernando.
- Colour correct
This has become such a trend lately and there are many products that are available now to colour correct. And in 1 easy extra step you can have flawless skin. So to make it super simple; you just go ahead and colour correct BEFORE your foundation application. This makes it much easier to blend. You can get creative and use things you already have in your makeup bag sometimes, for example in one of my videos I show you how to colour correct in depth and I use an orange lipstick under my eyes and it works perfectly well. And to make it even simpler: you use orange tones to cancel out any blue tone- so you use an orange/peach/red concealer under your eye and anywhere else you have darkness. Then purple brightens and gets rid of dullness- any purple or pink will help give you that glow we all want. And lastly green cancels out any redness- so if you have pimples or redness then this would really make a huge difference. You just place the green on the red areas before you apply your foundation. In colour correcting make sure you only apply the colours in the specific areas which you have problems in, because if you slap on any colour correctors to the even tone areas that colour will start to show. Some of my favourite colour correctors are in the image below.
- Lights, Camera, Lashes!
There is a reason why TARTE even decided to name their famous mascara Lights, camera, Lashes! LOL! If you are doing any work behind a camera, or taking any pictures lashes add so much to the looks. In general long lashes just complete the entire makeup look. I really believe that falsies can make such a massive difference and they look beautiful if applied properly. You should choose a pair that compliments your eye shape and that you feel comfortable with. Some of my favourite lashes are MAC strip lashes and the LILLY lashes. But I’ve heard amazing things about the HUDA lashes as well, although I haven’t got a chance to ty too many of their styles. I have always gravitated towards MAC for lashes cause I think they look so natural although they are long and thick. If you are a person that is finding it hard to put on lashes, some tips I can give you are; try with tweezers and still if it’s difficult then cut the strip lash into 3 pieces and try applying them separately. Practice! You’ll get the hang of it.
