HOME REMEDIES FOR HAIR
Fenugreek (Uluhal) hair mask
Fenugreek, better known as Uluhal, can be easily found in your kitchen as it is a popular ingredient used in Sri Lankan food. It is known to soften your hair and give your hair that natural shine. Grind 2-3 tablespoons of Fenugreek seeds, and mix it with yogurt and 2-3 teaspoons of coconut oil. Leave the hair mask for 20-30 minutes and rinse thoroughly.
Egg and banana hair mask
Eggs and bananas not only keeps our tummies happy, but also helps to make good hair days an everyday occurance. This remedy is good for damaged hair as this mask is rich in protein and antioxidants. Mash one banana up and mix it with an egg. Apply the mixture on to your hair and leave it on for 20-30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner as usual.
Natural cleanser and conditioner made from Veralu Leaves
Veralu is a fruit that is a Sri Lankan favorite. The leaves of the veralu fruit is considered to be a good natural hair cleanser and conditioner, it has good anti-dandruff properties and it leaves your hair with a natural shine. Blend some veralu leaves well and apply the paste onto your hair, massage the paste into the roots of your hair well and leave the paste on for 15 minutes. Then rinse the paste off with cold water.
Natural cleanser and conditioner made from Shoe Flower (Sapaththu mala and leaves)
Another natural hair cleanser and conditioner that is bound to leave you with glorious hair. It also has anti-frizz and anti-dandruff properties. Blend some shoe flowers as well as its leaves well and apply the paste onto damp hair. Massage the paste well into your hair and it’s roots and leave it on for 15 minutes. Then rinse your hair thoroughly with cold water.

Coffee and sugar scrub
Coffee and sugar makes one bloody good scrub and excellent exfoliator, bound to remove all the dead skin cells away, leaving you with soft and smooth skin. Take some ground coffee or coffee powder, mix it with 2-3 teaspoons of brown sugar and apply it on your face with water. Massage your face well in circular motions for 1-2 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly with cold water.
Venivelgeta scrub
Venivelgeta is one of the ingredients our aththammas love to rave about. Venivelgeta is good for oily skin types, as it removes excess oil from your skin, leaving you with soft and supple skin. Take some venivelgeta powder and mix the paste with 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil. Massage the paste gently onto your face in circular motions for 1-2 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.
Yogurt and turmeric face mask
Yogurt and turmeric – a match made in heaven for their anti-inflammatory properties. Take 2-3 tablespoons of yogurt and mix it with 1-2 teaspoons of turmeric. Apply it well on to your face and leave it on for 25-30 minutes before rinsing it off thoroughly with cold water.
Aloe Vera and lime face mask
Aloe Vera; probably one of the most talked about ingredients that can be easily found in our back garden. Take two Aloe leaves, peel it off and scrape the gel off. Blend the gel well until it becomes a paste and add a teaspoon of lime juice for that vitamin C boost. Apply the paste onto your face, leave it on for 20-30 mins and rinse it off well with cold water.
2-3 leaves of Aloe Vera gel and Isopropyl alcohol make for a good hand sanitiser as well. Peel off the skin and scrape the gel out and mix it with Isopropyl Alcohol, in a ratio of 3:1. The Isopropyl Alcohol should be the dominant ingredient with 3 parts in the mixture, for it to work effectively. The Aloe Vera gel will act as an anti-inflammatory agent, making sure that the mixture won’t be too harsh on your skin.
Papaya and honey face mask
How many times has your amma told you “eat more papaya if you want lighter skin”. She wasn’t wrong, Papaya is very rich in vitamins and minerals, and it is bound to leave you with lighter, nourished and glowing skin. Smash some papaya well and add 2-3 teaspoons of honey and mix the paste well. Apply the paste onto your face, leave it on for 20-30 mins and rinse off well with cold water.
Kadala piti (chick pea flour) face mask
Chick pea flour, better known as kadala piti, has great anti-acne properties and it tightens your skin. You can either buy kadala piti from the supermarket or soak chick peas overnight and grind it well for powder. Take 2-3 tablespoons of kadala piti and mix it well with 2-3 tablespoons of yogurt. Apply the paste onto your face, leave it on for 20-30 mins and rinse off thoroughly with cold water.
Butter and sugar lip scrub
Butter and sugar makes a heavenly combination, not only when it comes to baking but also as a lip scrub. It’s a great exfoliator, making sure all the dry and dead skin cells on your lips come off. Take half a teaspoon of butter, mix it with a little bit of sugar, apply it on your lips and massage it well for 1-2 minutes. Rinse off well (or just lick it off your lips) afterwards.
HOMEMADE BODY SCRUBS
Yogurt body scrub
Take 1-2 tablespoons of yogurt, 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon of honey and 3 tablespoons of brown or white granulated sugar. Mix the ingredients well into a paste and apply on your body after cleansing with a regular body wash. Massage each part of your body for 1-2 minutes in circular motions and rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water afterwards.
Coconut oil body scrub
Coconut oil is another ingredient that is raved about and can always be found in your kitchen. Take ½ a cup of Coconut oil and ½ a cup of granulated brown or white sugar. Mix it well until it becomes a paste and apply it on your body, gently massaging each part of your body for 1-2 minutes in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water afterwards.
