Gone Girl – Gillian Flynn

2017 Sep 3

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

Flynn’s popular psychological thriller novel ‘Gone Girl’ gained further popularity after the release of its gripping movie adaptation. Although the film was an instant success, reading the novel which inspired it is a more thrilling experience altogether. Flynn certainly has a talent for psychological thrillers, as she has proven repeatedly. ‘Gone Girl’ truly redefined the genre of mystery for the 21st century.

The story is told in a rather clever manner, which builds suspense from the very beginning and certainly throws the reader off course. As such, the sly but dramatic plot twists are extremely shocking and satisfying. Each character is incredibly complex – in their own personality and that which is perceived by the public. It is certainly not a clear cut murder mystery that most readers are accustomed to. Although the novel is not for everybody, this New York Times Bestseller is certainly a try.
