How You Can Help Flood Relief Efforts

Sri Lanka was shaken by catastrophe last year when the monsoons hit us hard. Floods and landslides terrorized everyone and people lived in fear of not knowing what was going to happen next. However, in this time of desperate need, countless people rushed to help and play their parts as good citizens and occasionally wiping out the shelves containing rations in stores.

With the returns of the monsoon this year came the same terror felt by Sri Lanka. An estimate of 500,000 persons has been affected by the weather and over 100,000 have been displaced from their homes. As of today, the Disaster Management Center reported that 164 people are dead and a 104 have gone missing. To stay up-to-date on the prevailing floods, click here. The situation seems to be getting worse, yet everyone is flocking together to provide the help these victims need.

As of now, the most needed items include rice, dhal, water bottles, tea leaves, milk powder, soap, toothbrushes, sanitary items, Panadol, bed sheets,clothes.etc.

  • Royal College Flood Relief Center

The Principal, Staff and Prefects’ Council of Royal College have organized a Flood Relief Program in order to aid the victims of the prevailing weather conditions.

They have urgently requested that the following items be donated to help out the victims;

  • Drinking Water bottles
  • Sanitary Napkins
  • Towels
  • Bed sheets
  • Batteries
  • Candles, Match boxes and Torches
  • Panadol, Siddhalepa, Paspanguwa packets
  • Sleeping Mattresses, Tents

The food items needed are;

  • Infant Milk powder
  • Biscuits
  • Dry Rations – Rice, Dhal, Dry Fish, Sugar Packets, Cocunut milk packets, Spices

The donation centers will function from 7.30am to 5.30pm from the 30th of May onwards and there will be 3 donation centers located near the College premises,

1. Near the Lalith Athulathmudali Statue
2. Near the War Memorial in front of the College Hall
3. Outside the Basketball Court Opposite Racecourse

  • Soup Kitchen Sri Lanka

Soup Kitchen Sri Lanka is attempting to reach those affected in the Kalutara and Agalawatte areas, which are two of the worst affected areas in the South. They are currently in the process of arranging 1500 Rations & Hygiene Packs.

Deadline to receive cash (preferably) donations would be Tuesday, 30th May and the lorry to transport the goods is scheduled to leave Wednesday morning, 31st May.

The Gold FM Cares Flood Relief Campaign is calling for everyone to unite in lending a helping hand to the displaced who are suffering due to prevailing weather conditions.

DressFactory will be contributing to flood relief efforts by collecting clothes which will be distributed among the victims of the affected areas.

Both women’s and men’s clothing items will be collected at the DressFactory Flagship store at No. 15, Visakha road, Bamabalapitiya from 29th May 2017 onwards from 10.30 am to 7.30 pm. All collected items will be distributed to those in need through the Voice for the Voiceless Foundation. 

Please note that clothes handed over should be in usable condition and any undergarments provided should be new.

Through Dialog’s SMS, eZ Cash and Star Points channels, you can donate multiple times and Dialog will triple your donation.

The non-profit wing of Kapruka.com has made efforts to allow people to donate either goods or money, where you can donate up to $1000 or select what you wish to donate from listed rations.

Takas.lk as arranged three different packages consisting of different rations and essentials that are needed and range from Rs. 750 to Rs. 1000.

The youth organization has organized for donations to be sent to Dodangoda in Kalutara. The project is supported by the National Child Protection Authority and the Sri Lankan Army, who is coordinating with residents at the site to distribute donations. This event is organized through the collective efforts of Kindness Collective, SocialServices.lk and the Voice for the Voiceless Foundation. There are a series of collection points set up where you can hand over any of the donations listed below;

Online donations can be made through their website, where you can choose to make a single donation or even make a donation every month. The Red Cross Society is one of the most well-known and a credible association that provides assistance during and after the disaster, doing their best to help the victims and get them back to their old lives.

 

Sarvodya is an NGO striving to help people help themselves. Online donations can be made on their website and goods from the following list can be given to the collection points in Moratuwa and Borella.

Round Table Sri Lanka is usually one of the first groups to respond to emergencies that may occur. They collaborate with armed forces and plan to provide food rations and medical supplies initially, and then move to focus on improving the living standards of the shelters. They aim to help the victims to rebuild the houses and their livelihoods. You can make your generous contributions on their website.
