“Pub classics in the heart of Fort”
The Steuart &Co Pub leans confidently into classic pub food with generous portions and a menu that travels between British comfort staples, bar snacks and familiar Asian flavours. This is a place designed for long tables, shared plates, and unhurried conversations over drinks, with groups settling into long wooden tables, ordering to share, and staying well past the first round of drinks. While not every dish hits the same note, the stronger plates show clear intent and comfort-driven appeal.
Appetisers
Isso Addiction — LKR 2,500 (4/5)
Batter-fried prawns served with the house spicy sauce. Crispy and satisfying, with a sauce that delivers heat and flavour. The only drawback was seasoning; a little more salt on the prawns themselves would have sharpened the overall bite.
Shrimp Pepper Boats — LKR 1,750 (5/5)
An unexpectedly excellent dish. Stuffed capsicum, crumbed and fried, with shrimp inside. The sweetness of the capsicum works harmoniously with the prawns, creating a flavour profile that feels both familiar and distinctly local. Interesting, well-balanced, and memorable.
Luscious Baked Crab — LKR 3,750 (5/5)
A standout from start to finish. Creamy, generously cheesy baked crab topped with quail egg and served with garlic toast. It arrives in three small dishes, making it ideal for sharing, and the presentation is as appealing as the flavour. Rich without feeling heavy, and easily one of the best dishes on the table.
Mains
Mixed Grill — LKR 3,900 (3/5)
A large plate with chicken thighs, wings, pork, grilled beef, sausages, a fried egg, and garlic potato wedges. While the variety is appealing, several cuts of meat were noticeably tough.
Roasted Pork Knuckle — LKR 7,750 (4/5)
Slow-roasted with crackling, served alongside mash and braised cabbage. The meat is tender and comforting, and the flavours are solid, but the dish plays it safe. A richer glaze, deeper seasoning, or more contrast in the accompaniments would have added complexity and pushed it from reliable to truly memorable.
Mutton Cobbler — LKR 3,500 (5/5)
One of the strongest savoury dishes on the menu. Slow-cooked boneless mutton stew with vegetables, topped with cheesy gratin bread. Deeply comforting, rich without being overwhelming, and very well balanced. This is the kind of dish that justifies a return visit.
Big City Pork Ribs — LKR 8,000 (4/5)
A generous rack with good texture and portion size. The sauce, however, leans heavily into a fruity sweetness. Sticky ribs should be sweet, but here the fruit-forward note overtakes the expected tomato and smoky base, slightly throwing off the balance.
Fish & Chips — LKR 3,500 (5/5)
A classic done exceptionally well. Crisp, light batter with fluffy, flaky fish inside, served with tartar sauce and chips. Reliable, satisfying, and exactly what you want from this dish.
Cordon Bleu Chicken Burger — LKR 3,100 (5/5)
Stuffed chicken breast with chicken ham and melted cheese, topped with a fried egg and BBQ mayo. Rich, indulgent, and well-constructed. A true pub-style burger that delivers on flavour and comfort.
Desserts
Churros — LKR 1,200 (5 stars)
Crispy on the outside, soft inside, rolled in cinnamon sugar and served with chocolate and caramel sauces. Simple, well-executed, and easy to enjoy.
Raspberry Chocolate Indulgence — LKR 1,100 (5/5)
A deeply chocolatey, fudgy dessert layered with raspberry ganache and served with ice cream. While the chocolate flavour is strong and well-executed, it stops short of feeling truly indulgent. A thicker ganache layer, warmer element, or more textural contrast would have added decadence, but it remains a satisfying choice for chocolate lovers.
Baked Alaska — LKR 1,150 (5/5)
Arrives beautifully torched, with a pleasing contrast between warm meringue and cold ice cream. Cutting through reveals cold chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream and sponge beneath, creating a clear contrast in temperature and texture. It’s well-executed and visually appealing without feeling overworked, making it a satisfying, classic finish to the meal. The presentation is polished, and the textures work exactly as they should.
Drinks
Bullfrog – LKR 4,800 (5/5)
A layered cocktail with a bold, eye-catching appearance, the Bullfrog delivers a sweet-forward profile balanced by citrus and a mix of vodka, gin, rum and tequila. Despite its strength, it goes down surprisingly smoothly, with the addition of a redbull, making the flavours blend cleanly rather than competing. Easy to drink and well-structured, it’s the kind of cocktail that sneaks up on you.
Sangria Latina – LKR 1,750 (5/5)
Fruity and lightly sweet, this sangria is packed with fresh diced fruit, apple juice, lemonade and a gentle wine base that keeps it from feeling heavy. The addition of the brandy and triple sec give it just enough of a kick when siped. Served chilled and easy on the palate, it’s smooth enough to sip slowly, and reminiscent of an easy Italian afternoon spent lingering over a second glass.
Ambience
Housed inside the historic Steuart Building, the pub carries an old-world charm with a relaxed, social atmosphere. It’s well-suited for groups, long lunches, or evenings that stretch comfortably into the night. The setting complements the menu’s focus on hearty food and shared plates, making it a solid choice for casual gatherings.
