Life is full of challenges and we are all determined to face it courageously while fighting against time. In doing so, man’s curiosity has been acting as a main ingredient throughout the history to evolve into a more intelligent living being. Early people of civilizations such as Babylonians, Chinese, Indians and Egyptians were among the first to quench the curiosity of the sky by methodical observations. As a result, it paved the way into a birth of a natural science called Astronomy.
Astronomy is simply the study of universe beyond Earth’s atmosphere where the main focus is on celestial objects like stars, planets, moons, galaxies, nebulae, comets, asteroids etc and their associated processes.
Initially, Astronomy was centred on the predictions and observations made from the naked eye. With the advent of observatory tools, the nature of the Universe began to unfold in front of our own eyes with continuous exploration with measuring and mapping the positions of different celestial bodies. This is now referred to as a branch of Astronomy called Astrometry. Another branch of Physics was born thanks to Astronomy, called Astrophysics. It mainly deals with stellar structure and evolution, the properties of interstellar medium and its interactions with stellar systems, structure and dynamics of systems of stars and systems of galaxies.
Astronomy has been sub divided into two main categories as observational and theoretical in the recent past where Theoretical Astronomy is focused on the development of analytical and computer modeling of celestial objects and phenomena. Theoretical scientists try to create or modify models while keeping minimum inconsistency with the existing data. Galaxy formation, origin of cosmic rays, physical cosmology and general relativity are some of the topics studied under this area. In addition, nowadays dark matter and dark energy have become hot topics.
Observational Astronomy is more oriented on acquisition of data from observations and carrying on analysis using Physics. Astrometry, Celestial Mechanics, UV Astronomy, X-ray Astronomy, Gamma ray Astronomy, IR Astronomy, Optical Astronomy and Radio Astronomy come under this Observational Astronomy.
Even with time, Astronomy has created many interdisciplinary links with other subject fields like Chemistry, Biology, Archaeology, Statistics etc while proving that it is an evolving discipline even an amateur can contribute without the barrier of age.
This is the astronomical perspective of Nerdynaut where it is proposed to cater the knowledge hungry minds of Sri Lanka. To keep the desired flames of Astronomy alive, Astronaut by
Nerdynaut will be held on 8th October 2016 from 3 pm onwards at British School Auditorium where a panel of experienced speakers from Sri Lanka and USA will address the gathering on various topics of Astronomy.
