A small idea that unveiled its way into an interesting story of success. The Colombo Design Market, is an attempt to recognise art and design, by providing a platform for artists, designers and musicians to get noticed.
What started off as a small venture has since then grown of huge magnitude. The most recent Colombo Design Market held a few weeks ago was at the beautiful floating market in Pettah. Although the skies showered with heavy rains, the organisers and designers showed us that nothing can get in the way of their passion and enthusiasm.
While walking down the side walk leading upto the stalls, you would be instantly greeted by the smell of homemade food wafting in the air. The hustle and bustle at the mehendi stall right next to Euphoria’s handmade jewellery was insane. Girls, young and older were lining up, despite the rain, to get the beautiful Indian designed henna on their hands. Walking further up, you’d meet Tarja and her collection of intricately and thoughtfully designed outfits including the ‘aneh’, ‘aiyo’ and ‘isso wade’ cotton panties!
My senses directly led me to the smell of food. From the hospitality to the mouth-watering savoury and sweet delicacies, the food stalls at the Colombo Design market were of top notch. Tropical goodness was served in a cup at CocoCeylon right beside the chill lounge by Bean Bag Bliss.
Club House by Vivaldi was quite intent on carrying the message of life being too short to wear boring underwear. Thinking of adding some mediocre fashion into your life? Let’s start with the basics shall we? Both the designers at Feather Project and Shoelace Studio absolutely blew us away with how amazingly functional their hands can be. From customized dream catchers to key chains to necklaces and bracelets, Feather Project had lockets of surprises in store. Shoelace Studio’s main area of focus was wooden carving, and from lamps to inspiration board to the intricate outline of Iron Man, they stunned us all!
