USD 3.5 Million Paid Directly to Sri Lankan Tuk Owners

2025 Jul 10

Negombo, Sri Lanka – Adventure travel social enterprise tuktukrental.com announced a major milestone, having disbursed over USD 3.5 million in direct income to tuk-tuk owners across Sri Lanka. The announcement was made at the company’s Annual Supplier Conference, held at the Auric Grand Ballroom in Negombo on 15 June, with over 600 tuk owners, industry stakeholders and community leaders in attendance.

Operating a fleet of nearly 800 tuk tuks, tuktukrental.com offers guaranteed monthly USD payments to over 700 local families, connecting them with high-value travellers from countries including Germany, the Netherlands, UK, Australia and Belgium. The business has welcomed over 12,000 travellers in the past six months, offering unique self-drive experiences across the island.

“Our model proves that travel can be a tool for equitable economic growth,” said General Manager Naeem Anis, citing internal research that shows 85% of tuk owners experienced income growth—with many progressing from lower income brackets to sustainable livelihoods.

Key income usage includes:

  • Children’s education (45%)
  • Household expenses (40%)
  • Debt reduction (35%)
  • Healthcare and savings (30%+)

Notably, 1 in every 3 tuk tuks rented via the platform is female-owned, signalling  greater gender inclusion in the mobility sector.

As part of its expansion, tuktukrental.com has added a new service hub in Arugam Bay, joining existing locations in Katunayake and Ella. Internationally, it is scaling operations from Sri Lanka, and Cambodia to the Philippines, replicating its impact-driven tourism model beyond Sri Lanka.

Reinforcing its commitment to sustainability, the company announced its goal to transition 25% of its fleet to electric tuk-tuks by 2027. The event was supported by Vega Innovations (Platinum Partner) and Valvoline (Gold Partner).

Rated 4.9 stars on Google and TripAdvisor, tuktukrental.com continues to lead in responsible travel, community empowerment, and inclusive economic development.
