A riveting psychological thriller, ‘Behind Closed Doors’ does an excellent job of building the suspense and chilling horror within the story. The true nature of what transpires behind those four walls is masterfully disguised by the appearance of a perfect home. B. A. Paris plays with the words and the hazy lines between the secrets and reality of this seemingly perfect marriage. The book can be called more of a thriller than a suspenseful mystery, since it does not hide behind the veil of lies – everything is laid bare for the reader to see.
Nonetheless, each subsequent page reveals more and more about the horror behind the situation, and seemingly perfectly normal sentences within the many pages will give the reader chills. The novel is relatively shorter than many thrillers, which makes it great for a quick bedtime read, one that will leave you thinking about the story for days. In fact, the novel is rather terrifying due to its riveting realistic nature and a type of capture Grace lives through, where freedom is all around but never attainable. The quiet pretense reminds us that appearance can be deceiving and if you look a little closer, you see the cracks beginning to form.
