The types of clothes you must probably throw away

2016 Jan 5

For us shopaholics, December was our favourite month, and believe me when I tell you that this year’s sales and offers topped any we’ve seen before. Nearly all of our favourite stores had in store promotions and offers and to make it more interesting, nearly all our credit cards gave us massive clothing deals. Now the problem that we face speaks for ourselves. Not enough wardrobe space! Yes, this s every girls problem, but despite that, even though we do have a closet full of clothes, we often find ourselves feeling like we have absolutely nothing to wear. But here’s the truth: You don’t need more clothes, you need less. All you have to do is throw away what you don’t need.

Listen close…

  1. Double Trouble

Undies and Tees are a different story, but six of the same floral dress raises a red flag. Most of us would top our shopping carts with clothes just because we think it looks pretty or it fits our body shape well. But next time when you shop, before you buy a piece of clothing, always ask yourself if you do have something like it at home, and if you do, it best to walk away.

  1. Comfort Clothing

These are the kind of clothes you wouldn’t be caught dead in, outside the house— worn out, oversized, stained T-shirts, saggy-bottomed yoga pants. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Who gives a shit what I wear when I’m just hanging out at home?” You’re right, a 100 percent. But this isn’t about anyone else, this is about you. They say that you are what you wear, in that case, are shabby, old, worn out clothes the best for our self-esteem? Now it’s not that you won’t have comfy clothes anymore. It’s just that what you have looks more presentable and the amount of shabby and worn out tees will reduce to just a couple. We all know that this is the hardest tip to read and do, just heart-breaking.

  1. Only Once

These are your virgin clothes, the only that you’ve worn only once.  These are usually clothes that you bought because they were on discount, or because you thought you would eventually get used to that piece of clothing, or the more obvious, there’s something about the item that you don’t like anymore. Girl, take a piece of paper, jot down why you haven’t worn the item frequently and if it’s any of the above, throw this item in the donation box. Because the truth is, if you haven’t worn it more than once, you are less likely to wear it again, it’s just taking up more wardrobe space.

  1. Ghosts of the past

These are the outfits that you once, loved wearing but now you don’t like or absolutely hate.  It’s time to confront your old pieces of clothing and update yourself with new trends and fashion styles. You once loved this stuff. Why? What changed? Were you just copying a style you thought looked cool on someone else? What was it that first drew you to this cloth abomination and what was it that finally forced you to retire it altogether?

  1. Split personality

These are the types of clothes we all have in our wardrobe that fir the ‘other you’. The skinner or fatter you from the past. These are the jeans we can’t throw away because our moms threaten us not to buy anymore in case we get fatter or skinnier. Well looking at it, it just doesn’t help you reach your health goals at all. It’s actually a set-back. If you aren’t happy with the shape that you are in, and your goal is the loose and gain weight, then having these clothes in your cupboard will actually be some sort of motivation. But if you are keeping them in for the sake of it, my suggestion is that you throw it out.

  1. Anything that you don’t like

So what we are going to do next is to filter through all the items of clothing in your cupboard. What is about these pieces that is turning you off, even though they don’t fit into any of the other five categories? More likely than not, you will find a lot of overlap between this and all your lists. The items that you would most probably put into the box under this category would be the styles that you are drawn to but never wear, colours you think are pretty, but not on you, stores and sales where you tend to make your worst choices, even people who compel you to buy things you don’t actually want.

Donation boxes and built-in closets are both quite a new concept to our country. But throwing away what you don’t need honestly feels like getting rid of the clutter and the mess not only in your closet, but in your head. It makes you feel so much better. The next time you buy yourself a piece of clothing, think a little harder, do you really need it? Do you really like it? Do you have more of it at home? If any of these red flags pop up, it’s best to not buy it.
