What we had
Not your regular bubble tea experience!
Ja-ela’s fave bubble tea spot has finally made its way to Colombo and whilst the little counter has much to be desired in terms of ambience, their drinks are cheaper and tastier than usual and we’re glad they’ve finally opened up a branch that’s central and easy to visit. Bubbluscious is Colombo’s latest competitor for the ever-growing trend and has now been operating for a little over 6 months. Their menu is extensive, serving up a large range of bubbly drinks and even a selection of bubbly desserts so we were definitely hyped to be paying them a visit.
Unfortunately, the day we swung by, they had no desserts on sale. Zero. Nada. And we got sad ☹ . But a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do so we revved up to try a bunch of their tea flavours.
Drinks

They have multiple categories for their drinks ranging from coffees to teas to smoothies to fruity flavours so making a choice is a task, especially if you’re as indecisive as I am. But worry not, you can’t really go wrong with your choices because almost all of their drinks are quite delicious.
Green Apple, Lychee & Peach Fruit Fiesta- Rs. 300

We started off with an amalgamation of fruity teas. This drink was cold and hella refreshing. With the Green Apple and Peach flavor pulling through quite strong in the tea and served with peach popping bubbles, I didn’t find this drink to be overly sweet as with fruit flavours at other places. The drink may have included quite the number of flavours for the palette to process, but there was a great balance between them and it was light and delicious. The only let-down was that the Lychee flavor was nowhere to be found but then again, there’s only so much a tongue could endure, eh?
Taro Special with Whipped Cream- Rs. 350

Notice how the whipped cream looks sad and deflated, leaving much to be desired in terms of presentation, but Taro is a personal favourite and I love me some boba so this option was very welcome. For those of you who don’t know, Taro is a root vegetable (say what manyokka!) that can be turned into a nice milk-based purple beverage. The flavor isn’t for everyone, but I loved this bubble tea because it wasn’t too sweet and was nice and creamy. It was a little milkier than usual Taro teas (probably due to that sad-cream topping) with the root flavor not pulling through too strong, but it was a heavier option than the fruit and it tasted great. The boba was also a little softer and less dense than the stuff you’d get at other outlets but that didn’t hinder our Taro experience.
Choco Strawberry Lush Smoothie- Rs. 320

So this little guy tasted like a chocolate straight out of my childhood, I just can’t place which one. I’m used to my milk-based bubble teas coming with boba but the Choco Strawberry Lush came with strawberry popping bubbles and was a warmly welcomed change-up from the usual! The chocolate drink wasn’t too thick and there was a bite of strawberry seeds too, so I’m guessing they add real strawberries in there somewhere, though the only real strawberry flavor was from the bubbles. If you’re trying to pinpoint the flavor, think the liquid form of a strawberry-filled chocolate by Lindt. Noms.
Milo – no Ice Cream- Rs. 280

So the Milo option as Bubbluscious comes topped with a scoop of ice cream for Rs. 320 but we were swimming in bubble tea by this point so we opted to remove the ice cream, which brought our price down as well. For Rs. 280, this is a hefty portion of Milo goodness. I don’t usually love the Milo options at other places but this bubble tea had a distinct creamy malteser-like taste to it and it’s definitely one of the better milo bubble teas I’ve tasted so far. It again came with boba that was softer than usual but we were pretty satisfied with this choice.
It’s worthy to point out that for the prices, their portions are pretty big and seeing as you get a whole bunch of unique stuff here, this might turn into my go-to place for the next few months. In terms of ambience, they’re just a little counter for now and you can sip it on the white iron chairs outside, but we do hope they vamp up their setting with beanbags like in their Ja-ela outlet. The staff are friendly and they know their stuff and we’ll definitely be stopping by for their bubbly desserts again sometime soon.
Have you tried Bubbluscious yet? What did you think?
