Alright, show of hands if you’re contemplating on cutting your hair super short within the next week. Exactly. This heat is getting to us. It’s messing with our heads and sadly, our hair. With a temperature as high as 30°c that even goes as high as up to 34°c, we are at an absolute need to revamp hair care routines. Having to take a bath every day to prevent hair from getting oily or all frizzled up is a painful task, especially with all the other things we’ve got to do, a nice long shower every morning is an uphill battle for most of us. There’s plenty of ‘hot weather hair dos’ online, but making sure you care for your hair is more important. Sure a messy bun would hide the sweat and grease, but on the long term, the damage all the grease and frizz does to your hair is irreversible.
We all detest the moment when you walk into the heat and your hair puffs up like a lion’s mane. This article will help you tame the mane. Once you’ve got your hair under control, you can Beat the heat –with our conjoined article on the ultimate fashion guide that would make you less like a sweaty disaster on the hot days that are yet to come.
- Don’t brush dry hair
If it’s one thing all hair experts say it’s about avoiding brushing your hair after it dries. When you do brush it when it’s dry, it disrupts the hair cuticles and stretched it, leading to breakage. Stylists recommend that after a shower you brush, comb, or finger-comb it. Towel-drying can go both ways, it may work on some of you and not on the rest of you. Towel drying is also said to roughen up the hair’s cuticles and then, it wouldn’t lie flat. Instead, you can use a superabsorbent towel to gently press the water out of your hair. What is finger-combing? If you shouldn’t brush your hair when it’s dry, finger combing acts as a great substitute. Water is key. Combing your hair with wet fingers might weave its magic on your mane.
- Let your conditioner and styling cream do the magic
When the heat mixes up with humidity, it can seriously dry out your hair. Deep conditioners and masks are a must. You would realise that anything that is oil-infused does wonders on your hair!
Also, when using a deep conditioner, try and go for one with a protein base. These types of conditioners help repair dry, damaged hair and protects it from the heat at the same time. This is of priority to girls with curly or coarse hair. Frizz happens when dry, porous hair sucks up the moisture in the care, causing the shaft to swell. If you want to keep your natural texture, apply it right after you wash your hair. This would create a protective layer against the frizz.
- Don’t over heat it
Darling, the heat is going to subside soon. Or, so we hope. Sri Lanka never has a winter the rest of the year is bearable compared to the nightmare we’re all living now. Relaxers and straighteners make your hair brittle and it easily leads to breakage. If you do want to use you blow dryer or flatiron or curling iron, then always use a heat-protecting spray. Go easy on the hair irons and the curlers, you don’t want to damage your hair with additional heat!
