2015 Sep 7

We all wish that nothing ever expired. But that really is never the case is it? Then again, here are 10 items that actually doesn’t really expire.

1. SALT

Given that sodium chloride being a mineral taken from the Earth, salt being another permanent entity shouldn’t be surprising. Having been used for ages as a flavouring agent in almost every kitchen comes to our homes with added iodine. This fact makes the table salt in our shelves only exist for an average of 5 years however.

2. POWDERED MILK

Now we all know that the powdered version doesn’t taste as good as fresh milk. But the mere reason it exists is the fact that it can last for ages as long as its kept seal packed.

3. PURE MAPLE SYRUP

Invented by the native american pemmican is still a favourite of all those looking for a long lasting source of protein.

The specific ingredients used were usually whatever was available; the meat was often bison, moose, elk, or deer. Fruits such as berries were sometimes added. Cherries, currants and blueberries were also used, but almost exclusively in ceremonial and wedding pemmican.

8. SUGAR

Another much loved flavouring agent of all mankind, sugar is also something that could last a long long time if stored properly.
It’s said as long as the moisture is kept at bay, the sugar is good to go. And, even hardened sugar once crushed is apparently edible.

Yes, our favourite or rather most commonly consumed food if stored correctly can last forever.

Researchers have found that white rice will maintain its nutrients and flavour for 30 years when stored in oxygen-free containers in temperatures below 5 degrees Celsius. Red rice, however, isn’t really on the same page due to its natural oils and what not.

10. DRIED BEANS

Although it was found that after 30 years, the quality of beans may decrease a notable bit they were still in edible form with more than 80% of the protein and other nutrients still being available.
