Chinese flavours with a Mount Lavinia Beach view
Loon Tao is one of Mount Lavinia Beach’s long-standing restaurants, offering a Chinese seafood dining experience right by the shore. While seafood takes centre stage, the menu also features a variety of meat and vegetable dishes.
With over 293 options, the menu covers everything from appetisers to soups and mains, including popular seafood like fish, prawns and cuttlefish, alongside rarer delicacies such as crab, lobster and sea snails.
Currently BYOB while awaiting its liquor license, Loon Tao serves beer and plans to introduce a selection of cocktails and spirits that blend the flavours of Chinese cuisine with the essence of Mount Lavinia.
APPETISERS
Golden Fried Prawn Balls — LKR 1,880 (5/5)
There’s something undeniably satisfying about a well-made Chinese prawn ball. Loon Tao’s Golden Fried Prawn Balls quickly became a favourite, with their crispy bread cube coating and tender, slightly sweet prawn filling. Lightly seasoned and deep-fried to perfection, they were the perfect way to kick off the evening.
MAINS
Yangzhou-style Seafood Fried Rice — LKR 2,880 (4/5)
The Yangzhou-style Seafood Fried Rice is a simple, classic dish, nothing groundbreaking, but a well-executed version. Generously seasoned and packed with seafood and vegetables, it delivers on flavour. The addition of sweet corn is an unexpected touch, though it does little to make the dish stand out. Still, it serves as a solid base for the rest of your meal.
Chinese Hong Kong-style Stir-fried Tofu with Garlic, Chili and Various Seasonings — LKR 1,880 (5/5)

One of the more unique Chinese dishes on the menu, this tofu was an absolute treat. Crispy on the outside yet creamy on the inside, it offered a delightful contrast in textures. The deep-fried garlic, chilli and seasoning mix added a crispy, flaky layer packed with umami, perfectly complementing the tofu’s mild creaminess. The flavours were both familiar and distinctive, making this a standout dish.
Chinese-style Chilli Chicken with Spicy Sauce — LKR 1,780 (4/5)

A simple yet flavour-packed dish, this chilli chicken strikes a balance between spice and subtlety. Unlike the fiery versions found elsewhere, its heat is mild, making it a great pairing with the fried rice. While rich in flavour, it is on the oily side, something to keep in mind if you prefer a lighter dish.
Hot Butter Cuttlefish — LKR 1,880 (5/5)

No Chinese feast is complete without Hot Butter Cuttlefish, and Loon Tao’s version does not disappoint. Served dry, it may not suit those who prefer a saucy rendition, but the flavours are spot on. The light, crispy batter is perfectly complemented by a subtle hint of butter and chilli, making each bite a satisfying treat. This was Hot Butter Cuttlefish done right.
DRINKS
Lavinia Cooler — LKR 1,100 (3/5)

The Lavinia Cooler is a refreshing mix of mint and cucumber, perfect for those who enjoy subtle, cooling flavours. However, it may feel a bit underwhelming for those who prefer bolder, more intense tastes.
Mango Passion Lavinia — LKR 1,200 (4/5)

A mix of mango and passion combined with citrus, this was a refreshing drink with which to wash down our Chinese adventure.
AMBIENCE
Loon Tao is a true staple of Mount Lavinia Beach, living up to its motto of “seafood on the beach.” The generous portion sizes are a highlight, large rice portions can easily serve three to four, while mains comfortably feed two to three.
Set right on the beach, it offers a romantic atmosphere after dark, enhanced by tiki torches and tables placed directly on the sand. It’s also family-friendly, with high chairs available on request, making it perfect for a casual family dinner, whether inside or upstairs.
