Black Adam: “The Rock” or “A Bomb”?

2022 Oct 25

Hollywood’s most beloved powerhouse, Dwayne Johnson suits up as one of DC’s most brutal anti-heroes of all time!

Black Adam who is best known for being the archnemesis and predecessor of the superhero, Captain Marvel (now known as “Shazam”) is reimagined and brought to life on the big screen and fans, including myself, could not be more excited! Johnson, who also served as an executive producer of the movie, mentioned during the London Premier that this has been a dream in the making for 15 long years, finally making its debut on 21 October 2022.

Black Adam tells the story of his alter ego, Teth-Adam, an Egyptian slave of 2600 BC in a fictional location called Kahndaq, and how he became the champion chosen to wield the power of the wizard Shazam. The movie also tries to show how this character would adapt to the modern world after being presumed dead for millenniums. Like every other typical superhero movie, Black Adam is packed with a lot of action, impactful performances, and exceptional CGI.

While the plot addresses the origin and power of Black Adam, it also introduces the members of the Justice Society of America (JSA) from DC Comics, consisting of Doctor Fate, Hawkman, Atom Smasher and Cyclone, alongside other notable characters, Adrianna Tomaz and the film’s main antagonist, Sabbac.

Johnson and Bronson’s performances were praised by critics and audience members. Despite coming under certain criticism due to the lack of seriousness and swapping the comic-accurate Egyptian accent for an American one, Johnson more than made up for it by capturing the essence of the anti-hero with his “tough guy” persona and “badassery”.

Brosnan’s portrayal of Doctor Fate is something fans didn’t know they needed to see, bringing the character to life exactly how we imagined. Fans were pleased that the movie also featured other members of the JSA for the first time in theatres as they fought alongside each other and Black Adam to save Kahndaq and its people.

In my personal opinion, this may not have been the perfect superhero movie, but it’s definitely worth watching. Black Adam combines hand-to-hand combat scenes, humour and surprise cameos from “familiar faces” we haven’t seen in a while, to both enthral and tease fans about what might lie ahead for the DC Extended Universe.

So, for those like me who enjoy watching Dwayne Johnson kick butt in the most “Dwayne Johnson way”, then this is the movie for you!
