Come Sundown – Nora Roberts

2018 Mar 7

The Bodine Ranch and Resort was a family business and home to four generations. Now in charge, Bodine Longbow makes a shocking and disturbing discovery with the new hire, Callan Skinner, when she finds her Aunt’s battered body in the snow one night- an Aunt who was supposed to have run off before Bo was born and was long presumed to be dead. Despite police suspecting the new hire, Bo finds herself turning to him for support as another woman is found murdered. The twisted story her Aunt has to tell about the past—and the threat that follows in her wake—will test the bonds of the Longbow family, and thrust Bodine into a darkness she could never have imagined.

Roberts is a best-selling and distinguished author of more than 225 romance novels so you can expect some of her best in her recent work. Beginning in 1991, the novel covers Alice Longbow’s disappearance in all its gritty, graphic and heartbreaking detail and then shifts to the present where Bodine and Callan contend with the danger that lurks in the mountains that surround them as well as their own attraction. Roberts explores on a deeper level the effects of emotional and physical trauma but also, in a typical move, the importance of family ties.

Using two different timeline threads joined by one family, Roberts proves that she can be a master of thriller if she wanted. While being a romantic suspense, the novel gravitates more towards suspense elements with the slow romance being an added bonus. It does take a while to ease into the plot but once you do, you’re landed with a gripping suspense and an absorbing drama. This is a much recommended read for those who enjoy mystery/suspense.
