You won’t feel the seconds pass…

Seconds Colombo has welcomed travellers from around the world to stay and experience the best of what Sri Lanka’s commercial capital has to offer, without the luxury price tag. The laid-back atmosphere sets the perfect backdrop to enjoy a relaxing meal, especially in the evening.

Whether you’re in the mood for a vegan treat, or some savoury meat, the menu at Seconds Colombo has something to offer for everyone. Don’t forget to grab a refreshing beverage too! Tucked away in the borders of suburbia, it’s the perfect little package for a great evening. We wouldn’t be surprised if you go back a second time!

Appetisers

Popcorn Shrimp – LKR 1,535 (4/5)

Very few things can beat the umami of great seafood, and this dish definitely satisfies that craving. The shrimp’s savoury goodness carried a satisfying soft and fresh crunch. You might want to order more than one serving if you’re with friends because once you’ve started, it’s very likely that what’s on your plate will evaporate!

Teriyaki Mushroom Bagel – LKR 1,385 (4/5)

Bagels are more of a breakfast food for me, but we wouldn’t mind having one of Seconds’ Teriyaki Mushroom Bagels any time of the day. The earthy flavour of the mushroom pairs wonderfully with the bagel. Vegans rejoice, for this is a crowd-pleaser among Seconds’ visitors we hear.

Mains

Traditional Lamprais – LKR 1,980 (5/5)

‘Lamprais’ is an iconic piece of Sri Lankan cuisine. At Seconds, you’ll get a complete and perfectly traditional rendition of it. The tantalising aroma erupts as you unwrap the leaf, teasing what’s to come. The juicy meat and the acidity of the brinjal moju set the perfect combination. Prepared with the right balance of spices and flavours to suit any palate, this lamprais is nothing short of perfect.

Vegetable Thai Red Curry – LKR 1,485 (3.5/5)

Thai red curry is known for its striking flavour and rich flavours. Thanks to the help recruited from a Thai national living in Sri Lanka, Seconds Colombo’s Thai curry maintains its authentic spicy, yet soulful flavour layered underneath the soothing undertones of coconut milk. But, compared with what we tried so far, it lacks a bit of ‘oomph.’

Chicken Cheese Kottu – LKR 1,700 (5/5)

A must-try! One bite and you’ll be greeted with a mix of spices layered with soothing dairy. The problem with most kottu around is that it gets overwhelmingly heavy, oily or too spicy. This kottu will is one you can take your time enjoying, with plenty of soft roti and chicken. It’s definitely shareable between two.

Cashew Chicken with Jasmine Rice – LKR 1,800 (4/5)

Paired with a helping of aromatic rice, this cashew chicken hits just the right spot, making it a dish worth an honourable mention. We couldn’t really discern the subtle notes of the cashew, but it’s fair to say it will make up for a comfortable meal.

Sides

Chinese Pork Dumplings – LKR 1,650 (5/5)

One serving includes eight delectable dumplings with chewy dough that reveals perfectly seasoned pork with each bite. The tender, juicy meat melts in your mouth, and paired with the soft dough of the dumpling, it has just the right mix of spicy and sweet, to make you savour each bite. You can easily finish all the dumplings on your table as they are, but don’t worry, they come with a side of soya sauce for an extra kick.

Desserts

Golden Smoothie Bowl – LKR 1,300 (5/5)

Served in a coconut shell, the Golden Smoothie Bowl is an all-in-one tropical breakfast and dessert. You’ll be delighted with its tropical fruit, seeds and grain, together with oatmeal. Served cold, this smoothie bowl is sweet and subtly flavoured by the familiar taste of oatmeal, so you’ll soon find yourself polishing your coconut shell clean.

Vegan and Gluten-Free Waffles – LKR 1,070 (5/5)

Waffles is one of the most popular menu items at Seconds, and we are not surprised. The vegan and gluten-free waffles are soft and doughy, topped with tropical fruit like bananas, with a dash of coconut treacle for sweetness. This passed our waffle test with flying colours. The fact that this dish is a healthy option is just a bonus.

Drinks

Pina Colada – LKR 1,950 (5/5)

This  Pina Colada has just the right amount of coconut cream and pineapple juice to complement the alcohol. If you’re trying to find a refreshing beverage to beat the heat, as well as a great conversation starter (thank you Rupert Holmes), we recommend you give Seconds’ Pina Colada a try.

Ambience

Stepping inside, you’ll find yourself in relaxed surroundings, almost as if you were transported to a secluded beach hangout, but in the middle of the city. The reception counter leads to a cosy dining hall, and friendly staff are always ready to help. Step outside the French windows to a relaxing pool area where you can enjoy the tropical air. Each element comes together to create the perfect laid-back, informal setting for a casual evening out, making Seconds Colombo a great place for your go-to urban escape.
